In which direction should windows face for better lighting in a building?

south (if it is in northern hemisphere). Also, it depends on local conditions, for instance, the cloud cover percentage. There are places where the atmosphere light is more diffuse, because of predominant atmospheric conditions; on the other hand, some places have incredible strong direct solar radiation. It is also important to consider the sun angle, among many other variables (like which time a day the rooms will have occupants, what kind of activity will they accomodate, etc.). 

So, basically, it is not as simple as facing windows north or south or east or west. 

That being said, curtkam answer would be more correct if your question was "In which direction should windows face for more amount of light entering in a building?"
