USC or UC Berkeley?

piero1910

I am currently studying architecture at Northeastern University in Boston, but I am planning to transfer to a better school in California. So, I would want to know which one of these two schools is better to transfer, and graduate. Thank you very much.

I would also say you need to check out UCLA and SCI-Arc

I think for informed opinions, you're going to need to provide more information... like are you an undergrad or a grad student? what year are you in, and do you know at what level each of these would put you as a transfer student (starting over vs. counting some of your previous courses)? Are you interested in straight-up architecture, or do you have secondary interests like interiors, products, or historic preservation? You're going to have to provide a bit more up front here.

OK. I am currently an undergrad architecture student at Northeastern University. I am doing the second semester of architecture. If I transfer to another school in California, it would be on fall 2013. These are the course that I have taken at Northeastern University. Courses: Fundamental Architectural Representation - ARCH 1110 – 09, General Physics - PHYS 1141, History of World Architecture 1. I am currently taking Calculus 1, History of world architecture 2, and Fundamental architectural representation 2.  I have been looking at some universities there. The universities which I liked were USC, UC Berkeley, and Cal Poly. But the one that I like most is USC because the location and I am little bit confused about UC Berkeley because I do not know if they really have architecture program as the other two universities. I am really interested in straight-up architecture. So tell me your recommendations.

I checked SCI-Arc, but I have been reading that the school is too artistic. So, I do not know if i should choose that one.

I am currently an undergraduate architecture student at UC Berkeley, and a senior at that.

I personally would recommend USC if you want to transfer out.

Berkeley definitely does have an undergraduate architecture program, but it is not a 5 year program like USC is. Also, you should consider accreditation. Do you want to get licensed or practice right after graduation? If you do, go to USC (they give the B.Arch degree). Berkeley's 4 year program will only give you the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, in which you will have to pursue a Masters degree afterwards if you want to get licensed.

Berkeley's undergraduate architecture curriculum is changing for the better, I think. Our new chair and dean have modified it so that there are two tracks being offered - the studio track and research track. It was a mess the past few years, but it seems to be getting better and more structured.

Also, USC I believe will give you more "straight-up architecture". Berkeley's program will allow you to take other electives outside of architecture, providing a more well-rounded education, but it doesn't seem to be what you're looking for though.

Cal Poly also provides the straight-up architecture, so I wouldn't rule that out.

But, which one would you recommend me between USC and Cal Poly? I also research SCI- Arc, but I don't know if I am looking for that kind of institute or university. Are these two universities ( USC and Cal Poly) Better than Northeastern University in the architecture program?

In addition, I have another question. Would the transfer process to another university delay my studies? Or doesn't it cause anything?

I would recommend Cal Poly SLO - I've seen fabulous designs and renderings come out of that school. USC is also very good too, but I think Cal Poly is better....

I wish I knew Northeastern's program better, but I'm sorry, I cannot help you in that area. Do you personally feel like you are learning what you want to learn at Northeastern? Are you in a 4 year program?

If you transferred to Berkeley, you would have to enter as a junior transfer and have two years before graduating. At Cal Poly SLO and USC, I believe, you would probably have to start from year one.

I do not know that so well. I think that I have to ask the universities to see what they say about  delays and if I have to start from zero.

If I remember right, USC sometimes offers a summer studio for transfers so that they can get into the 2nd year of studios instead of 1st. But yes, you definitely need to call the admissions people at each school and ask these questions! We can only guess at them, not being familiar with what courses you've taken and what the specific requirements of each school are at present.

I believe is the best solution. Thank you very much for your recommendations.
