Architecture Supplies

ky11

Hi, I'm going to be a college freshmen next year and I am required to purchase a long list of architecture supplies. What are some websites or stores that sell these? I live in New York City.

Pearl Art Supplies is a good place to start. They are located on E. 23rd Street, I believe.

drafting boards are so expensive. can't we just cut a piece of wooden board and call it a drafting board?!

you can.

you need definately need to adhere a drafting board cover (i recommend vyco) so that you have a smooth surface. don't buy cheap plywood either. get something on the more expensive end so it holds well over your college years. then you can purchase a parallel bar and screw it on to your makeshift drafting board.

voila!

I'd suggest a smaller (20x26) board fit out with a mayline and such as a complement to your desk at school for larger drawings. I always liked being able to whip out the small board and do a detail or such without being encumbered by the scale of things -- or to have multiple drawings going at once. Also really nice to carry back and forth -- so you can work on details and such at home and them trace them into layouts for larger presentations.

ky11, where are you going to school at? If it's far away, it may be better to wait until you get into town for some of the things, particularly the larger ones.

Don't waste money on an 'art bin' though. Buy a big tool box or fishing tackle box from a Home Depot or similar. They're half the price, and lots bigger!

ky,

What's on your list that you can't find? If you can't find it at Pearl, then you don't need it or it doesn't exist.

I' m not sure if it's still an option, but I always bought maylines with the stainless steel edge, both for personal use and for staff use at the office. One slip of a knife blade on plexi and you'll be drawing around that nick for years.

In school, I bought a 60" mayline for use in the studio, either on school provided drafting desks or on a hollow core door, as vado suggested. I still have the mayline and the door, many years later. I also used a small portable drafting board that I would use in my dorm room, off-campus house and later when I took the design exam (ARE's btw, pre-IDP, pre-computer).

And a plastic tackle box works great. Lots of different size compartments for holding supplies.

the one exception with ArtBins is the SketchPac:

I have had mine for 10 years now and find it is all I need for daily use.
