My name is Captain EO. I am a 3-dimensional dancing intergalactic space travellor settling down in New York City for a time. I have found what humans call a "sublease" in East Harlem. My question is how safe is it? I have heard good things from my peers-Idy and Ody- about a "new up and coming Harlem in New York City." Where may I find more information on this nearly gentrified neighborhood within the great borough of Manhattan within the great city of New York within the great state of New York within the great country of The United States of America on your measly little planet called Earth or something like that. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.
i have been told that Harlem is becoming better from what I have heard it was in the past. aaaaalllll of this is hearsay. i never SAW what it was and hav yet to SEE what it is. I heard harlem was not safe in the past...and now i hear that it is safe, or at least safER. I have found a great sublease deal that fits my needs and for a not to be beaten price in East Harlem. I have no problem taking it, in fact I have already agreed to do so but have not sent a check. I would just like to know from some of the people on this forum if anybody has heard or experienced anything on this change of state in Harlem, and better yet if you could point me in te direction of some literature on it. it woyuld be much obliged.
two good friends of mine live on w 127th & 5th, which isn't exactly east harlem, but not far from it. they love the neighborhood and the commute. in fact, they're hoping to buy a place there in the next few years.
i spent a week at their apartment in january and at no point felt any more unsafe than most other places in the city.
I have been to harlem 2 times in the past month, not east, more central. This was only to go to a show and then another trip to go to dinner. I was never harrassed or asked questions or looked at funny or anything. Nothing like I have experienced in "bad" areas of other cities.
One's safety in Harlem, and East Harlem in particular, can vary from block to block. The area around 125th between 3rd Ave and 5th Ave. are increasingly safe, particularly on the blocks with the new development between 120 and 125 on Park and Lex.
However, some blocks south and east of 120th are said to be a bit rough.
East Harlem does have one of the shortest life expectancy rates in the City. (Though this is largely attributed to poor health that is often associated with poverty and not necessarily a result of the high crime rate. Though there have been lots of research linking the three.)
Whether or not that danger is percieved or real is another discussion, however.
My sister used to live in West Harlem, several years back before it became an extention of the Upper West Side. She lived at 110th and Amsterdam. She hated living there because she would constantly get cat-called and even had men following her calling after her for several blocks. She felt very unsafe. On the other had, her husband never felt unsafe in the neighborhood.
You might want to do some research online and see if you can get police report data on a particular block or even building. I've seen maps like that before for Philly but I don't recall where I came across them.

info on East Harlem?
Hello-
My name is Captain EO. Thank you.
Sincerely yours,
EO
