ballasted (membrane laid loose & stones piled on as ballast) generally preferred for large roof, with minimal penetrations, lower first cost - however structure must be sized to support. difficult to find & fix leaks.
fully adhered (entire membrane glued to substrate) preferred for more complicated roof shapes & many penetrations. easier to locate leaks. - visually - all seams show. greater installed cost
Roof question...help!
What is the difference btwn. these two roofing systems:
Single ply membrane roof, fully adhered vs. ballasted roof? They are different right?
Single ply- TPO? Make provision for large and fast run-off.
Built-up roof requires ballast to retard degredation.
fully adhered = glued or screwed to hold it down.
ballasted = gravel/pavers on top to hold it down.

great thank you!!
screwed is mechanically adhered
"glued" is fully adhered
see roof type family tree in this document
oh, but don't buy into the TPO adverstisement
PVC is the way to go with thermoplastic roofs
oh! now that site where the pdf originates seems really helpful.

8-year old posts are known for their tendency to remain dead... but not this one apparently.
i wonder if the OP's roof is ponding or leaking? some questions can only be answered with about a decade of hindsight.
