The function of the space would determine what kind of lighting you want. In general, south-facing windows receive direct sunlight, usually desirable for residential. North-facing windows receive ambient/indirect lighting, which is good if you don't want a super-heated space or have items that may get damaged/faded in sunlight.

In which direction should windows face for better lighting in a building?
