apparently, they discovered a lot of ancient artifacts ( archeological stuff) during the excavation .. and they've displayed it in the station .. sorta like a museum ... very cool ..
Montreal - I think Mies did an underground 'mall,' and the city as a whole has alot of underground spaces to give the residents respite from the winters.
copenhagen metro stations are beautiful. really interesting circulation and amazing lighting. make sure you check the metro though, the S-trains are miserable.
this is nothing like some of the northern european lines... and it really has nothing to do with "merging with the environment" lol, so sorry about that... but i was very pleasantly surprised by the metro system in washington DC -
the moscow metro has got to be the world's greatest subway system from an architectural standpoint. look past the encrustations and ornamentation (although those are cool, i admit). what those architects did with the "ticket-and-tunnel" typology -- and the variations thereupon -- it's amazing.
and unlike in CHICAGO the trains were (a.) clean, (b.) crime-free, and (c.) came EVERY 30 SECONDS in rush hour. indeed, the subway system is one of the few parts of moscow that is reliable. the ladies in the aprons sweeping clean the streets every morning seemed to be another.
having grown up with the new york subways, which are nice but kinda uninspired for the most part, i was amazed with the montreal stations once i moved there. i would sometiems get out at a random station just to explore it for a while. they were almost all built within the same time period. if you like concrete there are some creative designs in the metro.
Yep, great subway, and considering that most of the stations have been made in the 70's and are still quite good by 21st century standards (even enjoying a vintage-70's revival!).
Each Station was designed by a different architect. But the idea at the time was that each subway's exit would be used for future projects site above ground. With all the commuters, it did make sense that these sites become top-value. But dunno why, it never happened, so the street-level exteriors are more bland.
They had grand and bold ideas at the time and they were using concrete like madmen (now it's all steel in Montreal and quite hard to get some good concrete workers over there)
They even used all the digged earth of the subway tunnels to create artificial islands to host the '76 World Exhibition (now F1 racetrack and parks)...take that Dubai!
kick-ass Subways Station...does it exist?
Hi,
I am looking for kick-ass Subways Station or/and Underground Projects..
Primarly where Subways merge with the environment and not being ''ticket booths + tunnels''
I was told the best ones are in Japan.
any references, pictures on that?
cheers!
check out koolhaas tram station in Den Haag (the netherlands) - has a nice wood floor.

don't know what this has to do with "interacting with the environment" either but...foster did the bilbao metro
and i think the moscow metro counts as "kick-ass"
