you have to go change the resolution in the rendering options. I don't believe it is the actaul 'resolution' you change but the density of the pixels (overall sixe of the rendering) which will allow you to transform it in photoshop to a smaller higher res image. the rendering will take longer with the higher res setting.
rendering in maya question
How can I render that the outcome is 300 dpi tiff file, somehow they are always 72 dpi low resolution files? please some help! thanks.

more specifically, go to
window
rendering editors
render globals
resolution
lock the res to maintain proportion and crank it up
thanks for the tip, what pixel size would be good without killing my computer?
