i trust you have all the latest mf doom output? stuff like king geedorah, madvillain & viktor vaughan... not quite as gllitchy and obnoxious as some of the def jux stuff (which to my ears sounds like geeky white boys hit the studio in an effort to make rap)

yeah def jux used to be tight but they've kinda fallen offf.....
Cop that old company flow (elp and big jus) its the cd that jump started elp's insane production. Also look check out.....................................................
Binary Star (one man army and one of the other subterraneous members)
Micranots (havent heard their new one but it supposed to be tight)
Diverse (some tight production by RJD2 and prefuse ) recorded like two blocks from my crib)
Urban Renewal program (another tight choclate industries production) compilation includes mos def, diverse, dose one
Mole Men (chicago producers with a lot of talent at least a couple great cds)
Juice (good chi-town battle emcee)
Murs and 9th wonder (great production by pete rocks protege combined with murs laid back style)
Little Brother ( amazing production from 9th wonder, and good rhymes from his two boys (not biological )
Typical Cats (another chicago group, tight jazzy production and decent flows)

gotta go but i'll post some more shit later

Nobody has mentioned the Anticon label yet, so...
check out Sole, Alias, Sage Francis, Non Prophets, Themselves, Buck 65, Jel... Pick up the Anticon compilation that just came out for a good sampling.

And randomly off the top of my head:
Sixtoo, RJD2, Qwel (of typical cats)
El-P - Highwater, Madvillain, King Geedorah, MF Doom, Jaylib, Big Jus,
Prefuse 73, Cannibal Ox, Company Flow, Dan the Automator (Deltron, Handsome Boy, Dr. Octagon, etc)

Btw, this is my first post, so.. hello everyone.

also I dont know what constitutes "underground" anymore but:

Aesop Rock [hooray for skizophrenic rap!]
Big L [erm various yeah, well he got dead ages ago so maybe a comp disk?]

Zioni [Mind Over Matter, yep]
Quannum [Quannum Spectrum, one time colaboration w/ blackalisious, souls of mischief, etc,.]
Mr Lif [i Phantom, Enters the Colossus]
Afu Ra [Body of the Life Force and then seemed to fall off?]
Dj Lingustical [good disk]
Swollen Members [Bad Dreams]

and my personal favorite:

cLOUDDEAD

check out this guy K-os from canada

i used to be heavily into the anticon label, but i ended up realizing they're just a bunch of whiny white boys with a lot of talent. cLOUDDEAD is amazing yet i lost theyre cd i also havent heard theyre new cd yet........should i rebuy theyre old cd or get the new one?....also the deep puddle dynamics cd is amazing. Interestingly i went to this Mic Wars show in providence (shitty battle that i got to go to for free...do not pay for such a thing!!!!) and alias was on of the emcees. He was horrible (freestyling is not his thing), obnoxious 12 year olds were practically roasting him yet he some how won (it was rigged)
Aesop is great yet his older stuff is a lot better than anything on that shitty bazooka tooth release (a common trend among most emcees)....even labor days is a lightyears ahead, or behind? Also qwel isnt good at all.....Hes defintiley the weakest of the typical cats and only tolerable on that cd, yet somehow he had the best solo release of those 3. Ive also seen him live various times and its quite annoying, he makes up the most ridiculous words. Maybe i just dont like fat white rappers who think theyre hardcore.\

In the end dont get fooled by the underground...There is a bunch of talent out there, yet there is also so much garbage. some people think that just because someone is "underground" then theyre good. Trust me i went to school with a bunch of white kids who are all trying to be rappers. A couple of my friends are talented and produce good beats, however there arent any good rappers around to flow over them. Most people with talent will actually get recognized and become somewhat popular...dont get me wrong i know the the condition of the mainstream and hip pop, but in the end the golden age of hip hop was the early to mid 90's and we're already past that. Theyre def. are going to be rappers who step up with original ideas and concepts yet hip hop isnt what it used to be...Theyre becomes a time (in architecture and art, or anything) when everythings been done and a barrier is hit, we just have to find a way to get past this barrier and create something new....

yes- although the underground offers another option from that of the commercial "rap" music. in that- this thread is pretty impressive. i've shied (sp?) away from hip hop due to the recent commercialism, bigotry, masoginy, and straight b.s. found on alot of labels these days. and everyone wants to shoot, kill, maim, sling, be a ladies man and magically not do the bid. i understand the plight of the young black man in the urban area, but there are many other ways out- other ways to get to where you have to go.

and another issue for all you wannabe thugs:98% of you "thugs" out there are really not thugs, gangstas or whateva other comparison to scarface you want to live up to be. a person who doesnt need any reason to kill for the name of their pride, money, sex, or straight studipidity is a thug. wassim-el-akhbin from iraq with an m-16 ready to kill anyone for the name of allah- now THATS a thug. no fear. if ya so tuff- go to iraq and practice what you preach.

otherwise, leave hip hop to artists and shut the f up....

nuff respect to el-p's empire... but even he admitted he (and his audience) slept on jay-z

this seems like a Talib Kweli crowd... and maybe some of you got Dizzee Rascal's brilliant album...

i just see her pissing standing up again
it dont make no sence when you see her here and there
She got a cock and balls with real pubic hair
with a single eye that sometimes weeps
since shes lyin on her bed then she rubs it on the sheets
saw her rub against the door or the back of your neck
if your mothers around then you make her double check
i hate to tell you with all due respect
take your mother to the doctors cos' her front bum's recked
You know why?

I love that Dizzee video. I hope he makes it here in the states. UK spin on Hip Hop is really interesting and a lot better than where most of U.S. rap is going at this point. I'm sick of those Ying Yang Twins/Lil Jon tracks, no substance to them at all. Breakbeat just isn't what it used to be in the 90's. Dizzee has some hot beats and it appears he can put down the rap. I think he has to tone down his Jamaican sounding accent before he becomes more accepted in the US. Its really hard to understand him sometimes. Good find on the video.

believe me dizzee's success (or lack thereof) in the states has nothing to do with his accent...
look at the success of dancehall djs (mcs) and the ascension of reggaeton rappers.

the lil jon/crunk tracks ARE as cutting edge as the grime stuff it's just that jon repeats himself too much.

as far as 'no substance'...
FORM = CONTENT for many of the greatest pop tunes of all time...
including lil jon stuff!

no question though... dizzee brings interesting content and style to the rap game... lil jon doesn't make great rap records but (some of them) are great records

dizzee's happy talk track would not have happened without jay-z's annie sample on hard knock life
dangermouse's production style would not exist without dj premier and timbaland

what this has to do with architecture... i have no idea.

i stick to the basics: its where u all come from
(i guess im a purist)

dj premier
Gangstarr (earlier stuff, again)
a tribe called quest
de la soul
prince paul --- tha MAN like corbu
nas/jay-z the earlier stuff is amazing, especially

Although a lot of the new underground is a turn off since its more of an intellectual-based-try-to-be-as-clever-as-damn-possible style (i.e. jedi mind tricks... etc)
but there are some that can REALLy make music: here they are

project blowed
abstract rude
aceyalone
7L esoteric
hmm.. cant think of much

stay true to what hip hop is..

well, architects can discuss music too, no?

Dizzee ... I think it is way too early to talk about his success of the lack thereof. The man is only 19 years old. I would argue that he has been rather successful thus far. Just the fact that people in the US heard of him is a pretty big accomplishment considering he's been in the UK underground all this time. Just 2 years ago, very few people knew of the UK underground, much less cared for it. I sure as hell didn't. Now Dizzee can be found in Ecko advertisements.

Accent is only one side of the card for Dizzee. cleaning it wouldn't guarantee him success here in the states but it would help. Its hard to listen to something if you don't understand it. His following in the US, albeit its small, is remarkable. I mean, he's a young guy from the UK going against some music's biggest juggernauts. US is the birthplace of rap, he has a lot of work to do in order to build credibility for british rap. He has talent, I really like that video above. He has some really hot beats too, Jus' a Rascal and Fix Up Look Sharp are prime examples. If he plays his cards right I think he has a chance to make a dent in the music industry. He may never be widely known in the US but he may pave the way for other british rap stars to make it here. Time will only tell. Just the fact that he is a huge fan of Nirvana, one of my favorite groups, makes him cool in my book.
