Has anyone else noticed how *slow* the latest versions of Autocad are when you first launch? It's like you can get up and get a cup of coffee and come back and your file still isn't up.
Will software always push the edge of hardware? We've got hotrod machines at school but they still sometimes choke on Autocad, Illustrator and other high end graphics packages.
An aside: I once came across a classmate asleep in front of his screen displaying the old "Press Enter to Continue" splash screen from Form-Z. He had launched it and then fallen asleep before the program could load.
another aside. a friend who, in a fit of desperation was attempting to finish both a design presentation and a history essay at 3 am, accidently typed about 2 paragraphs of his essay into the command line in autocad.

bloatware- 765- you're right, that's what it is. i wish autodesk made 2 versions autocad "stuff that 95% of users actually use 95% of the time" and autocad "every stupid feature we've ever invented- even the ones that are no longer useful". and the whole LT thing doens't count. i don't use it, but the few times i have it didn't seem to be any less resource-hungry.
also, got the 2007 update last week, i handed it over to it and they havn't mounted it yet... i'm kinda hoping that i'll be gone from here before they get around to installing it. the last upgrade was torture.
Exactly, I want the "I only use Autocad to draw lines" version, don't give me any AEC blocks, and definitely no Proxy Objects. I refuse to let that garbage infect my drawing.
cf - our office runs 14 and 2005 and revit on different stations. we have multiple copies of each and their licenses don't step on each other. i don't know what bottomdrawer is. i'm still glad i'm not on 14 anymore...

From single user R2004 upgrade (maybe your agreement is different),
Upgrades: If this Software is labeled as an upgrade (“New Versionâ€) to software previously licensed to you (“Previous Versionâ€), you must destroy all copies of the Previous Version, including any copies resident on your hard disk drive, and upon request by Autodesk return any Documentation to Autodesk or your Autodesk Authorized Reseller within sixty (60) days of acquiring the New Version. Autodesk reserves the right to require you to show satisfactory proof that the Previous Version has been destroyed. In the event Autodesk or an authorized third-party in connection with the Software licensed to you hereunder provides you additional software that supplements or extends the Software, that additional software shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement unless otherwise specified at the time of delivery.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may retain and need not destroy the Previous Version and may use the Previous Version solely if necessary for the purposes of (1) installing the New Version hereby licensed and (2) for archival (backup) purposes in order to reinstall the New Version hereby licensed if the initial installation fails. Under no circumstances may you operate the Previous Version.

i recently had to go BACK to R14 for a week or so and it was pure torture.
three small things that ended up being huge: no zooming with the mouse wheel, no layout tabs, and horrible printing/plotting interface.
lucky for me it didn't last long 'cause i wasn't accomplishing much.
