You could do a thesis on institutional architecture, i.e. prisons or schools,

or one that I think would be fun to do is the 20K house (look it up if you are unfamiliar with it)... deals with affordability and architecture in a real meaningful way.

Or you could do it on public housing, which is full of failings for you to "correct" in your design.  I would recommend a book written probably 40 years ago which is still relevent called "Defensible Space" by Oscar Newman.

I think a thesis needs to be focused, to provide an opportunity for innovation, and ideally to be a bit controversial.

Focus helps you to keep the thesis achievable.

Innovation could be in many areas, but ultimately it comes down to identifying a specific weakness or opportunity in traditional approaches, and proposing (and working out) a solution.

Controversy is good because it creates a dialog and an opportunity to challenge accepted wisdom.

It's also very helpful if it's something you really care about. Ideally you want to bring something of yourself to the thesis. For mine, (I'm an opera buff and ex-singer) I examined the aging population of opera-goers (average subscriber age >65 in my local company), and developed the architecture of a 21st Century opera house that would appeal to a younger demographic and provide a more engaged and direct experience, as compared with traditional houses.

So the focus was on the creation of an opera house, the innovation was about changing the architecture to improve the experience, and the controversy was to challenge the traditional configuration of proscenium arch and orchestra pit, which have ruled opera performance for three hundred years.

Chose a thesis topic/project that either explores some new methodology of design/practice, or pick a project type you wish to feature and sell when you go looking for a job after graduation.

@ Tim Barnes. I`m having the same problem. Your post helped me a lot. It`s a point of view that I needed to have. thank you :) It would be great if you could share more examples on inventing new ways to analyze subjects, or recommending materials to read.
