Japanese Visa Applications

Hasselhoff

Has anyone filled one of these out? It's mostly easy, but there are a few questions that could have more than one answer. Here's where I'm stuck (it's the weekend, offices are closed and I want to mail it Monday).

In the passport section where it says "Diplomatic, Official, Ordinary issued at _____ on ." What do you put for the "at" part?

Name of the firm or organization to which applicant belongs: Do I put Takenaka (where I will be working) or Penn (my home "organization")?

Guarantor or reference in Japan? Relationship?: Or is this where I put Takenaka? And what is their relationship? Employer or will the jibber up the whole visa thing since it's not a work visa, it's a general visa because I'm a trainee not an employee.

So simple but it's all in the semantics.

I sent my application in yesterday. I got a response from Takenaka and they told me what to write on the form. What do you actually do while you're there? How do they pay you? (cash, just planning on how to allocate funds?) I was in Japan for 8 weeks last summer, but do you have any Takenaka specific advice about what to take, how to travel cheaply (I'd like to visit some friends in Tokyo, etc) anything that could be of use. Awesome

when you first arrive it is quite a whirlwind. they take you back to the dorm and have a little party for you, but you are so jet-lagged that you can't really enjoy it. they basically assign you a friend that knows english well and is a "freshman", meaning they are a 1st year employee and living in the dorm with you. they basically look out for you the 3 months you are there. so the first day at work you get a little tour and i think you need to sign some papers and then they give you the wad of cash. they pay you per month i think. I can't seem to remember that detail. i just kept my money in my dorm room.

in terms of what to take for work, i had bootleg copies of photoshop, autocad, etc because their computers only run japanese versions. so if you want to be of any benefit to them i would suggest bringing it. I worked on a small competition for the majority of time i was there but also worked on some designs for a hotel in hiroshima. don't bring much in terms of supplies because they have all of that there. at work you are also assigned a mentor, again someone who speaks english and looks out for you. don't work more that 40 hours, they frown on that. they want you out there experiencing japan as much as possible. i sat down with my mentor and boss shortly after arriving and planned out every weekend getting their opinions on where to travel. we typically stayed at cheap ryokan's or hostels and took the trains everywhere. takenaka gives you a rail pass to get to and from work so you can also use that on the weekends to get to and from osaka which is really nice.

there is a really large grocery store near the dorm as well. i used to go there sunday nights and stock up on breakfast and dinner food rather than pay for the meals in the dorm, which for the most part very weird. we saved a ton of money by doing that.

you also get a week off in august for obon so that is when i did a my trip to tokyo, fuji, nikko and then all the way down to hiroshima. all of japan has this off for a holiday so it tends to get a bit busy.

if you have anymore questions let me know i can e-mail you directly

at the end of it all, i think i wound up with 200 coming back with me to new haven. i funded the entire thing, travel, food, lodging on the stipend that they gave us, which was nice.

Is this internship only available to grads from particular schools?

Yeah, I want nothing more than to get out of this godforsaken country, but its mostly because of the job I'm in...going back to work with professionals sounds appealing at some point. Does anyone know some Japan based internships/study abroads available? Sure I could go to the school's website but then I'd have nothing to check back to archinect for.

To add to what Genuwine said, it's for a student that just completed their second year of the M.Arch program (at least at Penn).

Check out the Consulate General's website(s). There are grants from the Japanese government to study in Japan. It's probably too late to get on board for this upcoming year. I think there are only a few days left to apply. From what I understand, foreign internships are tricky because of visas. In the case of Takenaka, it's this long running program, so it's all sorted out. Other individuals might be harder. I know a guy that is working something out with Massimilliano Fuksas in Italy, but he's not going to get paid. I think it's easy if you are willing to not be paid or if they pay you under the table. Someone else on here once mentioned that work visas are very hard to get. I'm actually classified as a trainee for the summer and it's not a work visa, it's something else. Also, language can be an issue as well. From what I've gathered on office visits last year (Ito, Maki, Kuma), Japanese offices are insanely, shall I say, rigorous. We're talking grad school like hours on a regular basis. So if you can't keep up with the language of the office, you're of no use. They have plenty of talented people there, some offices almost have wait lists of people wanting to work there (I know Ando actually does have a waiting list).
