u.mich waitlist

tworings

i am currently on the waitlist for the university of michigan, 2 year masters program. anyone else having a similar experience? has anyone been admitted or denied who was waitlisted here? i received a letter stating that i would be notified by mid-may, but the waiting is killing me! i envy those of you who have a definite plan for next year. for now i'll just keep waiting waiting waiting

maybe we should start an "accepted to grad schools (from waitlist) yet?" thread.

i tried and they maintain that the waitlist is "unranked". they also wouldn't tell me how many spots (if any) thay have to fill, or how many applicants are of the waitlist. they did say, however, that they have accepted students from the waitlist the past few years.
thanks for the advice though.

I was also placed on the waitlist but for the 3g program. They also told me that the waitlist was "unranked." I have also not heard but have plans to attend another school anyway. Good luck.

asauer,
which school did you decide on attending? good luck wherever it is!

i've been accepted to two other schools as well, but michigan is still my first choice, if i get in. also, i sort of feel like getting in from of the waitlist (if it happens) might make me feel like i am beneath the other students. sort of like a chip on my shoulder. oh well, i guess it might just motivate me even more.

tworings; beneath the other students? schools select their students based on a thin data set. it's a crap-shoot. after a year, you might be able to evaluate where you stand in comparison to the rest of your class.

still though, what does michigan mean "unranked" they need to have some way to figure out who to take from the waitlist when places open up.

colcol,
thanks for the vote of confidence. i agree with you that it is a crap shoot.

by "unranked" they mean that when it comes time to accept x # of students form the waitlist, they reevaluateall of the waitlisted applications. i think they do this so that they can select students that will fit in (or maybe not fit in) with the students that have enrolled.

when i was in ugrad, i was waitlisted to get into the upper division of
my own program. but when i got in, i did better then a lot of other students [i was the only one who got in that was waitilisted]. don't develop an inferiority complex. i think you'll find that, at least occasionally, you'll meet students who got grandiose scholarships that will find themselves on academic probation by the end of the first semester. and you'll work harder because of your position. it can be difficult for schools to judge the overall quality of a student because of a portfolio.

tworings,

I have decided on Georgia Tech over Umich. I went and visited both schools and found that they are both great schools, but I made the right decision for myself. And sorry Im not in the 2g or there would be one less person on your waitlist.

I am also on a waitlist-2g program. I haven't called them, but I've e-mailed a few weeks ago, and they replied that they would start working on it. well, it was like a month ago. Like "asauer", I also decided to attend the other school i got into.

Good luck, if i hear something from them, i will post it.

j_kietecture,
did you decide to definitely go to another school, even if you get accepted from the waitlist? if so, did you let them know this so that they don't consider your application? if not, would you? i've heard that they accept one round from the waitlist, and that is it, even if those accepted do not matriculate.
also, where did you decide to go?

Hello everybody, I too am on the 2G waitlist, and I called Meghan Lee-Hinkle a week and a half ago for information. She was very nice and told me that they were trying to get the people who were admitted to decide by next week(last week). With this being said I would think that people on the waitlist might hear back as soon as this week. I can't believe I am still worrying about the decision after so long. Keep me posted.

Also if anybody reading this thread had decided to go to another school, could you please let Michigan know if you have not done so already.

Whatever happens and wherever people go good luck and I wish you future success.

If I do not get into Michigan I have decided to go to UW-Milwaukee. I went their for undergrad, and I have a good realtionship with the many of the professors. I was hoping for Michigan for a little variety in my education.

tworings,

I would like to wait til the end. Even though I let ucla know i will be there from this fall, I want to keep my spot on a waitlist. Actually, Michigan offered me for 2g but ucla m.arch 1, which is 3 years program. that's quite long, and I am still not sure where i should go if i can get accepted in michigan. As Joe architect posted, i will wait another week and let them know about my decision. thank you,

and good luck!

I too have been waitlisted at umich. It sounds like they keep alot of people on this list. I have a friend that is currently in the program and he too was on the waitlist. Michigan informed him in the third week of May that he was offically accepted. I know that it would be nice if they speed things up.

the position that michigan is in right now is that they are basically waiting to hear back from students that have been accepted. once they begin to hear from these students, they will have some idea about how much room they have.

are you waiting for 2g or 3g?

I just UMich know the Friday before last that I won't be attending, so hopefully that gives anyone looking for a 3G spot a bit more confidence. Good luck getting in; It's a great program, but you'll thrive in any program if that is ultimately what you're passionate about.

I can relate to your postions. I just discovered that I am waitlisted at Cornell, but was happy with my choice to go to UW before finding this out. I almost wish I hadn't heard from them, as now my relief has vanished!

Does anyone have any news on the waitlist at Cornell, since we're on the subject?

As a former umich undergrad who helped with the applications while in school, and then was on the review commitee for applicants while at a different graduate school, I can hopefully offer some insight.

First, i would like to 100% agree with le bossman - having something to prove (if not to others, than maybe yourself) is a great motivator.

Secondly, because each university has different application and acceptance dates, it ends up creating quite a bit of chaos during the whole process, espically where multiple schools are concerned, or when dealing with waitlisting. I think most schools admit more students than they think will accept - trying to shoot for a full class after things iron themselves out. After that they take from the waitlist. Michigan is probably considered a top 20 or so school - so those getting into ivy leagues and such who also get into umich will probably opt out, leaving some holes.

I would urge you to take your time. Call people in the other admissions offices to ask for extensions, if you haven't visited the programs, try your best to make it happen, and last of all good luck.

One excellent piece of advice that a former professor gave to me upon applying to graduate school was " You are picking a school as much as they are picking you, they want people who will fit in and do well in their program".

hmmm... So I checked my wolverine access on Saturday because I'm a nerd, and something interesting happened. I clicked on "new & prospective student business"_"view Application Status"_ and the View Decision link had disappeared. I did not get an email, and the links was there on Friday so I see this as a bad sign. Has this happened to anyone else?

mine is gone as well. I agree that this is a bad sign.

i just checked mine, and the "view decision" tab is still there, and still sends me to the "you've been waitlisted" message. i don't think this is a good sign either...

the reason i think this is a bad sign is that i assume they would take action on the applicants' accounts that got in, and just leave the others for now...schools seem to notify the "yes" crowd before the "no" crowd.
