moving to NYC...really this time.

betamax

I am moving to NYC beginning of august. i need a place to stay for august until my future roommate gets out of his sublease. i have a dog...good dog. i would very much like to get him up there right away just because it will be easier in the long run. i've had a couple bites on Craigslist.org for a place for august that will allow dogs...does anyone here know any other resources i can explore or should i just stick to craigslist.org?

it is not imperative that i have my dog up there right away...it would just be way easier. waaaaaaaayyyyyy easier.

Are you only contacting the "temp" ad posters? If you are, you should also look at the shares, because they might be willing to have someone stay for a month.
I think a friend of mine is doing that. He's not in a huge rush to fill the other room, so, when someone needs a temp spot, he'll occasionally let it out.... if he likes their eyes. Or if they can get over his proportionately HUGE noggin.

Finally you two can hook up.

My apartment may be available because I am looking for a 2 br with my best friend and would be vacating around that time. If it is, I will let the board know of it for sure. Actually maybe I won't because I would pity anyone else with architectural knowledge living in this building. If your dog is large (even if it is a good dog) it may not be happy here for a month because it's a tiny place.

You can also try villagevoice.com and roomster.net but those aren't as lucky as Craigslist. The best thing I found for quick/instant/short term subleases is to walk up and down Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg and call people who leave their # up, but you have to actually be here to do that.

PS Even if you hate the 'Burg (I don't, but many do) it's the easiest place to find something short term and you'd only be there a month. Well worth it.

I think I have found a place in the verrrrrrrryyyyyyy northern tip of Manhattan...I think that is Inwood...218th street and Seaman Ave. right across the street from a park, very nice girls...i spoke with them about an hour ago. Is this a pleasant area? she said that it is a developing area...the rent is pretty cheap and the apt. is actually three bedrooms, and large. The price is right, I may be able to bring my dog, but i don't know about the area...it will be a long commute to the office in SoHo, but that will only be for a month. Anyone know about this area of the city? Safe?

A lot of musicians live in Inwood. A friend of mine just moved out of there a year ago. I think his only real complaint was the loooooooooong commute.

Is it safe? I would guess relatively safe, though a young woman (drama student?) was murdered in one of the parks there while out jogging a month or two back. I think that's highly unusual for the area, though.

The parks up there are beautiful, though.

sometimes i dont get where some female has the bright idea to jog in central park (or any park for that matter) between the hours of sundown and sun up and honestly say "i will be perfectly fine- i mean- its a park right?"

its not necessarily highly unusual- its highly idiotic.

cap'n EO- subway. learn it. live it. it IS a long commute. never complain about it and dont stare at the people who yell at their underpants smeared with their own un-namable liquids. or at the really strange guy with his face painted wearing a bikini thong hanging off the subway pole. licking his underarms....

and no- you absolutely cannot avoid these people.

..welcome..

Excuse me! What's even more idiotic is these rapist/murderers who have the bright idea to hang out in central park (or any park for that matter) between the hours of sundown and sun up and honestly say "I can assault these women as I please - i mean - they deserve it for being dumb enough to come here.. right?"

Ahem.

Anyway, you're right about the subway crazies.

captain,
really the best way to typically find a temp place here is to just come up and travel around. the message boards are usually the way to go for better places. i hate to reiterate it, but inwood is a very long commute and although not a bad neighborhood, it's very far out of the way...and still, shall i say, on the beginning of an upswing.

If you're looking that far away then you should definately also look at Jersey City and Hoboken which are a MUCH shorter commute and - especially in the case of Jersey City - can have very affordable shares and rooms for rent and less rigamarole (paperwork, crediit checks, etc.) than landlords and subletters may put you through in Manhattan. I paid less than $250 for a shared summer sublet in Hoboken a few years ago and had on average less than a half hour commute to midtown.

the village voice also has a service where you pay something like 10 bucks and for a month, they send you their listings before they go to print.
still have to act in a hurry though.
astoria is nice and the actually have brokers that work for you.
