Unfolding Meshes

poster

I was wondering if anyone has come across a fast way to unfold complex meshes (eg. meshes created using 3ds max)

Currently i have modelled up a skin/facade for a building and wanted to quickly prototype it using just card.

I have previously just imported the mesh into autocad and unfolded the mesh manually using 3d align etc... This can take hours to do for complex meshes

I am aware that several packaging applications will flatten meshes, like Touchcad, however, they do not seem to unfold it, so that it can be cut out and folded back into a mesh.

Any help would be appreciated

poster, i dont know of an unfold comand in 3d studio, however, there IS an unfold command built into Rhino, that would probably be your best bet

i have used the uvw unwrap + textporter method before, unfortunately i prefer to have a vector output in order to cut from.

Get a copy of Pepakura, it'll unroll polygons (export as an OBJ or DXF) and label your concave and convex cuts as well as create numbered tabs for re-assembly.
