Spin Off #2: Firms
I was hoping to compile a list of firms that are involved with architecture and development. Here's the ones mentioned on Strawbeary's thread:

AP - how do I do that? There wasn't even a PREVIEW button. An Edit function would be nice, all the way around.

smith+others are also doing some more 'recognized' development. when ted was down in atlanta a couple weeks ago, he mentioned a graduate level program he and jonathan seigel were starting at ucsd (i think that's the school). it would focus on development from an architects point of view.

a lot of firms dabble, though, maybe doing one or two projects every couple of years. there are fewer that are fully devoted to both, in the sense that they only design what they themselves develop.

damn, just came across Yoo again and someone beat me to it! Nice to see a super successful firm that does everything and is actually doing a decent job of promoting quality/progress architecture (I know, I know, we can debate the bs about Starck, but at least they are doing something).

AP - am I blind? There is no CP on my screen, just: Logged in: trace | Log-out | Edit Profile | Members | Contact Us

oh, it's just on the right of Contact Us on my screen, but that may be because I do/did a schoolblog, and am registered as such...

so, guess that means forget what I said...nevermind. ;)

sorry for the confusion.

I found this Article in the Architect's Newspaper, highlighting some other firms:

Avro KO
Bernheimer and Della Valle
Peter Moore Associates

I beg to differ about Portman being a bad designer. The atrium space of the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco is one of the most memorable spaces. I remember staying there as a young kid and getting vertigo but still being in awe of it. Though his designs might be disorienting, like the Bonaventure in LA, they somehow inspire a certain hyper-awareness of the architecture...something that Eisenmann would envy. Also, you gotta love the tacky-but-classic rotating lounge on top of the Bonaventure.
