Brand name schools in Arch?

aesculanus

I plan on living out my career based in NYC, and I'm curious as to whether there is a consensus that a brand name school is worth the tuition in the long run, even if it's just about getting your foot in the door. The loans for 3 years at Columbia, even after scholarships, are gonna run me upwards of $80-90k in debt (not counting any potential TA options). That's obscene. But can it pay off?

Would City College for 6k per year be a better investment?

That's Chicago

I think it's bullshit, but the brand name schools will definitely open doors for you. You can probably get a great education at any of the top 20 schools, but everyone at my firm knows who the Harvard or Columbia people are. And you'll get brand name professors to go along with your brand name school, whether they are actually helpful or not.
