Anyone else headed to UC for their M. Arch this fall? Or already there? Does anyone know where I could find a room for the first six months? Thanks in advance!
cincinnati's moving up in the world with craigslist
try giving a look there.also check out the citybeat, one of cincinnati's weekly's.
these are good if you need to do some searching online, but i would strongly suggest getting down to DAAP and looking on the boards, as mentioned by dillup. that would be your best bet
might want to check a campus newspaper as well. I know here in savannah the school paper has many many more rentals than the local newspapers. as much as 3 pages of ads as opposed to like 10 ads in the local newspapers.
Hey aeaa...the campus area isn't so bad...i've lived here for nearly 9 years....
i doubt crime stats are any worse than any other public university in a large city. luckily the area was untouched by the race riots of 2001 as the trouble makers were too damn lazy to walk up the hill.
seriously though...Sharry, i have to second mdler's post. Probasco or Riddle will get you close to campus. Digby and Joselin are in the same area (fyi, if you're just scanning internet rental addresses). There's better living in the gaslight area...a 10-15 minute walk uphill to DAAP. That area has older and nicer apartments, but the rent can double in that area as opposed the area directly surrounding campus.
I wish i had a larger room to rent out for you but the extra room in my apartment is like a closet. (if you're hard up for a room or some contacts, let me know via pmail and maybe i can help)....btw, i'm UC alum so I wish luck in the program.
ask my car and a couple of my friends about crime in the area, they might give you other stats. I lived there for 6 years. also, why did you steal your name from a song?
aeaa...you can ask my car too. you can't live in a big city and not expect stuff like that to happen to you...if you want the suburbs go to Miami. its that simple.
as far as crime around UC goes, some of you are painting a pretty bleak picture for Sharry. if you leave a cd player or something out on your car seat, in plain view...yeah, you've just increased your chances of it getting broken into. if you walk home, alone, in the middle of the night from studio...yeah, you just increased your odds of getting mugged...so i ask you... do you want to live in a big city and take the necessary precautions or do you want to go to Miami where you have to watch out for drunk-ass date-raping frat boys...choose your evil.
as far as my name...yeah, i like Forget Cassettes...why?
its not THAT bad, chances are nothing will ever happen to someone who goes to school there. I know plenty of people that never had any incidents at all and I only ever felt really unsafe at like 4 in the morning walking back from studio.
what is up with the miami comparison? are you from miami or something? and since when has cincinnati been anything BUT suburbs? downtown is tiny and dead, does this amount to a greater metroploitan area? I think you could most likely argue both sides of the nati city vs shithole, I am just glad I am no longer there and am now residing in beautiful, warm, sunny Miami!
i think we got our wires crossed, aeaa...i meant Miami U. in Oxford, OHIO, not Miami FL. Kudos to you for getting to a warmer climate...these rainy winters are wearing on me.
as far as cinci and the suburbs...yeah, cincinnati and dayton are merging into the fastest sprawling crapfest in the nation...and i really wish that DAAP would take an initiative towards smart growth to set an example.
what i find amazing about cincinnati in particular is how disjointed the city's core is with the suburbs. there are people in the burbs who have never even been downtown except for a Reds game. i suppose its like that at a certain stage in every city's ebb/flow but dammit, this city is really great and its being wasted. we have a thriving art and music scene and i hate to see it go to waste....not to mention the neglect of an entire segment of the community...now that's waste.
sigh...sorry to vent, you know this city as well, and its problems. -glad you found sunnier conditions.
oh, and you never responded to my Forget Cassettes query.
while i've never personally had anyone i've known threatened or mugged at UC, as i stated in the posts above...its a big city...(and shotguns at UC??? or in Cincinnati???...you've got to remember...UC is not in OTR).
There have been on-campus rapes reported...(and as at every university, probably quite a few non-reported) and DAAP, being open and used 24/7/365 is a target for burglars, etc....but DAAP'ers tend to police themselves quite well...we know when somebody's out of place or suspicious for the most part. Hell, people in my studio chased down a purse snatcher until he jumped on a public bus a few years back.
I agree with your sentiments regarding the planning dept mdler. they spend more time getting ready for their summer in Crete than they do anything else. I know DAAP is pushing interdisciplinary pursuits these days so maybe there's hope...i can't speak for whats become of the place in the past couple of years since i've graduated.
as for your question about OTR; i wasn't promoting smart growth for OTR, rather for the suburb sprawl. i know several Architecture studios have focused on OTR and after several experiments, i believe they are actually getting the city and neighborhood groups to pay attention. OTR doesn't need growth, it needs management of what's already there...better infrastructure, tax subsidies for rehab, stricter punishment for absentee landlord violations, etc. The new 'one-stop permit office' is a step in the right direction but none of this changes the fact that the city could give a rat's ass what happens in OTR...i think they're hoping that at some point the place will just burn itself down and they can build something shiny in the smoldering ashes.
I'll answer your question, rhetorical or not, with this....'well, no one else is saving OTR, so we might as well try'.
You bring up NK...yeah, Cincinnati has a lot of egg on its face with ignoring the Newport on the Levee type of development...Cincinnati's pie in the sky riverfront plan leaves a lot to be desired.
I fear that we have hijacked poor Sharry's thread. My apologies, Sharry. i hope that we've at least brought up some social commentary to ponder during your stay in the Queen City. I'll offer again...if you need some help in the rooming situation or acclimation to the city, drop me a pmail.
i tend to agree mdler...he can't get along with city council long enough to get anything done and he seems quite content with the current conditions...at least content enough to not propose a damn productive thing. although, he at least is standing up to the race-card throwing boycotters that aren't doing anything productive either.
hey, just think...maybe Jerry Springer or Nick Lachey will run...(yuk, yuk...)....but seriously, can we get a mayor that ISN'T on television...Luken wasn't even a decent news anchor, who thought he'd make a good politician????
well then, just looking for a roomie! I know cincy farely well, I went to Miami of Ohio undergrad arch. Lived in cleveland for 18 years of my life. And have some famly that lives in mason. I've just beeen living in Atlanta for three years now and was looking for some help.
Sharry...sorry we hijacked this thread. I hope you enjoy your time in DAAP. Good Luck. The work environment is a quite good and I've heard very good things about the new director of SAID.
There are lots of rentals on the south side of campus...usually rooms in houses or roomate situations....and on the north side you have the gaslight district....nicer, more expensive housing and on the west side of campus is the frat/sorority row with streets like Stratford, Digby and Joselin. Riddle is on the edge of this district and has a few nice places if you look for them.
As a rule, most of the 'newer' apartment blocks in Clifton are 1960/70's crap so i would avoid them unless its brand new construction...which does exist. Its actually better to look for older places...lots of character...high ceilings, nice woodwork....especially gaslight...but then the rents are above avg...600-700 for a one bedroom. try this link: http://cincirents.com/
-best of luck, Sharry.

Heading to U of Cincy M. Arch this fall and looking for a roomate or a room...
Anyone else headed to UC for their M. Arch this fall? Or already there? Does anyone know where I could find a room for the first six months? Thanks in advance!
best way is to go to DAAP and wander the halls... people are always posting sublets

studio is open 24/7. I suggest living on Probasco or Riddle, or even possibly gaslight area. Stay away from the otherside of McMillian, imo
and carry a baseball bat..........

BTW, Cinci has worse homicide stats than South Central LA
the history of car theft/break-ins along MLK at night outside of DAAP is relevant info. for someone unfamiliar to UC.
hey instrumentsofaction

Northern Kentucky is where its happening.
I also know people who have been jumped and had shotgun's pulled on them in broad daylight at UC.
As for DAAP becomming a catalyst for smart growth, the planning department is a f@#king joke (as anyone familiar with DAAP already knows).
Also, should the architecture department be responsible for saving OTR???
while i've never personally had anyone i've known threatened or mugged at UC, as i stated in the posts above...its a big city...(and shotguns at UC??? or in Cincinnati???...you've got to remember...UC is not in OTR).

we need to get rid of Luken's sorry ass
i tend to agree mdler...he can't get along with city council long enough to get anything done and he seems quite content with the current conditions...at least content enough to not propose a damn productive thing. although, he at least is standing up to the race-card throwing boycotters that aren't doing anything productive either.
