AsiaFront Village competition

dillup.

Is anyone else doing this competition? How's it going? Did you find the descriptions vague? Are you shipping it in mounted on a board or rolled?

The AsiaFront Village competition... its an international competition for Central Glass, with JA (Japan Architect magazine).

I recently heard someone warn me never to enter a Japanese competition because they only award winners to Japanese people. Then I checked last years applicants (1000!!... 450 of which were outside of Japan), and of maybe 20 winners, not one had a Western name.

hmmm.... i love japan, but i'm becoming aware of one of it's ugly sides.

no, but i'm doing the string theory one co-ordinated by the same magazine (as far as i'm aware of).

steven holl is the one and only judge so i doubt it'll suffer the same affliction you allude to...

...(1000!!... 450 of which were outside of Japan), and of maybe 20 winners, not one had a Western name...

well it's not like there's the 'West' then 'Japan'

There's a lot of countries over here you know, and not many of them have Western sounding names, maybe only Australia and New Zealand, and even then, there's quite substantial asian and indigenous populations.

so i really fail to see the logic of your statement.

thanks for the geography lesson, now I know Asia has a lot of countries after all... I know sometimes using words like 'western' can cause some people's 'politically collect' alarms to go off

Yes, Holl is a judge and there have had many 'non-Asian' judges in the past. This to me signifies there must be interest in the competitions outside of Asia as well. So - I find it surprising that of last year's winners, not one had a 'non-Asian' name. Combining this with the other person's statement made me think their might be some truth to it....

so there's my logic.

er, 'politically correct.' but i admit after reading my post.... its quite possible that of the 450 many of them were from other asian countries and in fact maybe there weren't too many non-Asian entrants.

anyway just curious to know if others have entered as well.

ha ha, relax, i'm not beating you with the big 'PC' stick...

if the topic interests you then enter. if i only entered competitions i thought i had a chance of winning i wouldn't be doing competitions at all.

do it to learn more about the topic, and have fun.

i'm currently reading a lot of theoretical physics to research the afore-mentioned competition and am finding it very interesting. i'm finding it's a lot like reading contemporary western philosphy. very fascinating stuff...it's like, right up my alley, and completely out of my usual sphere of thinking, at the same time!

just go for it...

"Do not use panel" is cleared stated on the competition website, dillup. Just dispatch it in rolled.

I like how you begin the discussion, dillup. The topic is really vague. What does he mean by "more affluent societies"? The truth is that the topic can be understood very broadly or very locally. It seems you sent sth, so what did you address? I never entered this competition everything that came to my mind was so suspicious.
