Supplementing income as architect

Jord99

Hi all--

I  created a similar thread about a year ago when I asked what major best complimented a degree in architecture. I have a similar-- but perhaps more specific question and this is just  about creative ways to supplement income as an architect if things don't pick up.

Has anybody went beyond the realm of  graphic and web design jobs to make additional money on the side ? I know in past threads both of these have been mentioned.

Thanks!

Have you consider a Porn-web model career?

Consider, you can work at home...and pretty much do what most architects do anyway!

jordan,

Good question and I hope you can generate some interesting replies.  The study of Architecture encompasses a broad range of skills from artistic endeavors to the understanding of technological construction systems - so it seems there must be something of value we can provide society in exchange for a reasonable income. However, unless you're in the small minority that can finance their own projects, the ability to apply our skills is largely contingent upon other individuals' ability to afford to build.

I've been advised to consider developing a hobby into a business = drawing, photography, music, pottery, computer graphics etc...but it's difficult to change gears.

Consider developing flexibility within your profession.  For example: Studying for the CDT exam might develop into an opportunity to pick up work as a  spec writer consultant.  Likewise with Revit/BIM.  It's important to keep your knowledge and skills sharp, so while you're going broke - make an effort to keep current with this ever-evolving profession.   Someday, the economy will turn around, and you'll be prepared.

Personally, I'm trying to scrape by through self-employment = small additions, zoning studies, spec work, post-construction forensic  analysis....etc.

That's my advise, but I'm looking for answers myself.

Unfortunaely, I'm reminded of the old joke:

What do Architects do when they retire?

answer:  They usually drive a cab.

Another architect joke:

An architect won a 50m $ lottery, and someone asked him what he would do with the money. The architect replied -- I will use the money to keep working, till I go broke again.

On a serious note, architecture, if done right is way too demanding physically, mentally and emotionally. It is very difficult to do something else concurrently to make more money, except, of course, web pornograpy. You could be doing AutoCAD completely naked, and people would be paying to watch you!

Really?!  People will pay to watch naked CAD work?

Sounds like we need to revise our dress code.  Where's that HR handbook, yo?
