In Santa Fe eat at:
-Dave's not here
-Harry's Roadhouse (the best, cheapest restaurant I have ever eaten at).
I can recommend you visit the following by Mazria:
-The Rio Grande Conservatory in Albuquerque
-The Genoveva Chavez Center in Santa Fe
-The UNM Campus to see work by Predock and Mazria (the law school)
-GO HIKE TENT ROCKS!!!!
-come skiing at Taos and/or Santa Fe
-If you are coming with a partner i recommend you go to the tubs at either ojo caliente or ten thousand waves
just enjoy, you'll love the land of entrapment
Let me think more...
if you've got an afternoon - go swim the blue hole. It's the scuba capital of the southwest. alright, it'll take most of a day if not more, but what a place!
in santa fe, you must hit happy hour at the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Otherwise, hang up your dreams of one day being cool.
There's a pretty great flea-market going north out of town, but i don't remember exactly where it is. hot and dusty though, that's for sure.
+q - nice land of entrapment line. i was only stuck there for 6 months, but it was kind of a shock. i lived in albuquerque so i may have had a altered perspective of new mexico, and i guess i lived in the "war zone", but i was always at work so that really didn't matter. go to the frontier, blakes has great gut bombs - get it with green, check out predock's condo's by the river with the neon. old downtown is interesting.
i don't know about the ice caves- but Maria's has great New Mexican food and an the best* tequila selection you'll encounter.
check out the tequila sampler, and the rellenos...
a couple more that haven't been named...
four corners area
taos pueblo
Madrid the gost town between Santa fe and Albq.
The Kimo theater in Albq.
Chaco canyon Canyon De Ceay (sp?)
Countles ruins near near Los Alamos.
Bandalier national moniument.
Rancho de chimayo.
And buy pottery at Acoma.
It is best to get lost and discover something new.
bandera ice caves are near El Morro, easy to do both.
Also, see Acoma pueblo...amazing.
and you should check out predocks offices actually...you can get a tour...everyone there is nice and you can see all his models and motorcycles.
there is a great power station done in pure modernist style between santa fe and albuquerque on I25 on the west side of the road, almost half way between.
madrid aint a ghost town...
predock aint got any buildings on unm's campus that i know of...
el patio had the best food when i lived there...
the architecture school is housed in a former furniture store...
and make sure you stay here...
vado, i may be wrong but i uderstood that Predock has at the very least the main parking garage at UNM. They just broke ground on Predock's new UNM Architecture School too (the parking garage is right behind the hole for UNM's SoA).
Madrid is a little more crazy than I care for, although it is a beautiful drive up there.
And you know what I have tried to go to MuDu noodles aobut 3 times and it is always closed.
Other places to eat in Santa Fe:
-Counter Culture (next to fish and pasta and the only "green fuel" station in town).
-Tecolote for breakfast
-Santa Fe Baking Co.
-Mariscos "La Playa" (BEST SEAFOOD)
-Body Cafe For good, cheap raw and vegetarian food
i actually did some work on the turbulence project, it's up in abiquiue.
don't know exactly about the fishing, but i know some guys who are into fly ishing - they seem to go up on the jemez river - but that could be because they're from ABQ. if you're really interested you can call Los Pinos Fly Shop - (505) 884-7501 - they may be able to help you.
don't forget about carlsbad caverns and white sands!
dunno about fishing spots, but I would imagine up around Taos is probably good.
Everyone is helpful because New Mexico is one of the coolest places on the planet and once you have experienced it you are compelled to share it with everyone. At the same time, when most people asked me about it when I lived there I would say 'its hot dry and awful, don't go there' in an attempt to slow down its assimilation into 'mall america.' Most Americans don't realize that NM is one of the 50, and I think a lot of New Mexicans are fine with that....
some of the best flyfishing in the world...chama river near taos, san juan river near farmington (world famous waters)
not sure about visiting of turbulence...I assume you can drive right up to it, but getting inside may be another thing.
Also, if you are in Taos check out the dobson house...an earthship built by a solar energy professor who is retired...they actually have rooms for rent as well.
i wouldnt go see a parking garage on my vacation even if it was designed by god hisself...
sadies was better when it was in a bowling alley...
the arch school aint built as of yet...
call kramer woodard he was executive arckeeteck on that turbulent thing...he makes good stuff too...

i sat across from karen black at a small dinner party and talked with her about bunch of stuff including her poetry. yes she is a writer/actor. it is very easy to talk to her. she likes new mexico.
i second the VLA (very large array - west of soccoro: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/), one of the strangest size/scale-busting things i've ever spent an afternoon staring at.
also second Ten Thousand Waves in santa fe.
eat at cloud cliff bakery (if it still exists???)
take in a couple lectures at the santa fe institute
on the list for New Mexico
I'm planning a trip to New Mexico. What should be on my list of things to do, see, eat, and visit?
I'm planning on visiting De Maria's Lightning field...
I'm also really interested in adobe architecture...
Should I visit the earthships?
thanks.
Yes go to the earthships.

Maybe it was mentioned already: don't you need reservations for the Lightning Field?
yes lb. they accept only handwritten reservations starting march 1.
You're on top of it JdesP! Enjoy!
thanks lb. it is a bummer that taking photographs is not allowed. I'll have to sneak a few with my cell phone. wink. wink.

no idea about gehry work, but there is the Turbulance house by steven holl up by taos...thanks for the props jeffe
whoa. everyone has been more helpful than usual. I've never been to Nuevo Mexico and would like to see all of it. Are there any good fishing spots?
i actually did some work on the turbulence project, it's up in abiquiue.

Are people allowed to visit the Turbulence House? I know it is a private guest house, right?
dunno about fishing spots, but I would imagine up around Taos is probably good.

May or June, when is the better time to go, weatherwise?
I have a few more days to decide.
heck, both.
you might want to look up the san juan river and see what is biting when if fishing is a big thing for you.
May, may be a tad more comfortable...but in new mexico it really just depends on where you are...a lot can change in 5000 vertical feet.
i wouldnt go see a parking garage on my vacation even if it was designed by god hisself...
sadies was better when it was in a bowling alley...
the arch school aint built as of yet...
