Design for a retailer, how to price?

Furniture Maker NH

I'm a furniture maker designing and building my own work for 10 years.

I've been asked to design and build a few pieces for a retailer with 5 stores.  The idea is I'll build a few small runs, they'll test market and ship the production of the pieces that sell best offshore.

I have the capability to meet their production needs but don't think I'll be able to meet the price when they order in volume.

I usually make a line of my own and sell that, or design and build individual pieces. This is a new area for me.

How do I/should I copyright the designs?

Any thoughts on the price structure?

I appreciate your input.

Two part contract.

1) Design fee with a license to manufacture or a royalty on sales. Specify that you maintain ownership of the design.

2) Production pricing based specific designs. You could waive the royalty / licensing fee on pieces you produce as an incentive.

Copyright sounds good but is just an invitation to endless expensive legal action that only profits lawyers.
