Thank you, Urbanist, for such an intelligent and considered post. You have summed up quite well what I see are the biggest problems and falsehoods of so much of contemporary Christianity. There are so many good religious groups doing so much important, and as somone on these boards (I think it was Living In Gin) once noted, very quiet good work in the world. Yet the people who get all the press are those who are in my opinion perverting everything good about the notion of Christian spirituality and service.
Thank you again. I'm relieved and happy there are people out there who can speak intelligently about why this proposal is so wrong. I'm so disturbed by it that I couldn't figure out how to address it beyond saying that the rendering of the main church building reminds me of a butt plug.
as far as making communities for catholics to feel safe (or superior) in a land of pagans....
well why not? there are much odder things happening in the states in the name of religion already. it is unlikely that anyone's civil rights will be trod upon and the law will remain the law we all know...so it's just a place for people to be together with like-minded people. who cares? from my perspective it is a bit goofy, but there is nothing wrong with being goofy, is there?
not so sure about constantinope being that cosmopolitian but if it WAS, my guess is that the various groups did not mingle very much. groups tend not to in any city, even New york. thats human nature...no?
why is everyone so scared of christians making their own town?
personally, it's not about the fear of christians making their own town...but through the architecture of this project, the commercial/marketing intentions are visible...and based on the imageries, the ave maria project it is not really about christianity...
the architecture should be humble and caring...
melquiades, nice job pointing out the guts of christianity...

Just thought it worth mentioning that the full title of St. Augustine's The City of God is The City of God Against the Pagans.
making money from religion means bad catholic? pilgrim sites included?
me, i figger as long as they don't try to make me live by their lites ain't my business to make them live by mine ( atheist, live now, die later, sort a thing ).
at least they aren't calling for a crusade against the infidels. ;-)
the comment about drive thru molestation booths is not as harsh as spending centuries boinging little kids and trying to hide it while broadcasting an imperious and sanctimonious morality based on fearful and ignorant superstitions. did i spell sanctimonious right? who cares, i'm gonna watch some porn...there's this one about a priest...

Sounds like a place one could eat some genetically modified produce while protesting stem cell research.
Where would Jesus live?
I can only imagine what books are banned in the central library.
