Hoegarrden has gone downhill. It used to be independant, then Interbrew bought the label and started exporting it to America. The quality isn't what it used to be. On that same note, outside of Ireland Guinness just isn't a Guinness. Didn't stop me from having about 15 pints last Friday.
On Saturday I sobered up with a 6 pack of the PBR....it's known the world over.
cowgill, I've had 15 of them, I think, including the 25% stout.
All but the winter lager either suck or are decent-but-fairly-run-of-the-mill
every last one of them is way, way overpriced.
stouts over ~15% just taste like syrup - they have to add an insane amount of sugar to compensate for the bitterness. even the dogfish head (best brewery ever?) 23% stout, while amazing, was just too syrupy to be enjoyable for more than a sip or two.
now the dogfish head 21% IPA, on the otherhand, is pure heaven.
thanks manamana! I just had the winter lager (lucky for me it was on tap - on second thought, make that a pitcher!!) and I agree ~ it is by far the best I've had from the SA camp!
why can't good beer be cheap? ~ I guess that's what PBR is for... 1.25 @ the local pub!
A ~ I've heard that Guiness is more bitter outside Ireland... I'll verify on my trip next year when I plan on swimming in the black goodness : )
OK I'm confised - my standard pint at my corner bar in Philly was what I called "Dogfish Head Pale Ale" - is that the 21%? I don't recall it getting me sloshed ever. But it was delicious.
I just dug around on the Dogfish Head site and now GAWD I want one! But all I have in the house is some Indiana beer I thought I'd try in the spirit of buying locally:
yeah, DFH makes 4 IPAs as well as their standard pale ale.
The standard pale ale is decent, but slightly overpriced for what it is.
the 60 minute IPA (6%, I think) is an above average IPA, but there are a couple others that are better at the same price (~$8 a sixer)
The 90 minute IPA (9%) is one of my all-time favorite beers. it's expensive enough that I don't buy it too often ($9.50/4 pack), but when you start getting into crazy beers, it's actually a really, really good buy.
The 120 minute IPA (21%) is a bit insane, but it's amazing. because of it's high alc. content, it isn't available in some states (here in NC we can buy 151 but not a 21% beer, hrumph) whole foods usually carries it in the states that allow it.
it hits you FAST - it is deceptively easy to drink
next time I go visit the folks, I'm going to call the distributor and see if I can get a case to age.
e: I didn't realize that the worldwide stout had dropped to 18%. I will have to try it again - the 23% was way too sticky-sweet.
I like *some* of the esoteric belgian beers, but to me a great number of them taste like someone spilled a bottle of chanel No. 5 in the vat - They tend to be a bit flower-y/perfume-y for me.
i believe the term that applies to belgian beers is "fruity esters" -don't like 'em. i had a dogfish head in nc last september while on vacation in asheville. the state had just legalized the higher alcohol content beers (high-gravity?). however, the serving was 6 oz.
point defiance and boundary bay ipa's are currently on the top of my list. i don't know if you can get them outside of the pac nw.
E, that sounds delicious. I'll have to keep my eye open for that one. Although a line of one of those reviews was a bit odd: "heavily yeasty with notes of wet cement, cobweb, and a light note of plastic/band-aid."
and if in seattle, my best friends own probably the best beer store and the second or third best beer bar in the nation. at least ratebeer.com says so.
we had some good friends over last night. i actually married them a few weeks ago. they brought chinese food, a gift to thank the minister, and many fine ales to share. my friends know me well as the brought one of my favorites.
well, this thread made me take a little shopping trip yesterday. my booty:
1 4 pack DFH 90 minute IPA, it's been a while and I missed it.
1 750ml rogue imperial IPA, 9.5%
1 flying dog mix pack. includes the pale ale, Hefeweizen, Amber lager, and IPA (had the IPA before, good for the price)
so far I've just cracked the FD hefeweizen. it's ok, if a little weak and a little too sugary. it's definitely nowhere near Hacker-Pschorr. it'd be a good deal at around $6.50-$7 /6
tonight I'm making thai penut chicken to go with the DFH or rogue (I haven't decided yet)
i have not been drinking. but i had a fever that made me feel like jack kerouac in mexico circa 1968. what will happen on cinco de mayo when liberty and vado hang???
drunk
tee
I'm just amazed at all of the drink names I've missed. What's a hogarden!? And a Lagavulin!?! Somebody hook me up!
Lagavulin is a delicious 12 (?) year old scotch witth enough flavor to fill a boxcar. Dunno about hogarden, but prolly similar.
I am not drunk, but would love to be drinking an Arrogant Bastard Ale- delicious 7.2% ale that comes in adult-sized 22 oz bottles.
Or some Basil Hayden's or Knob Creek right out of the bottle.
Hoegaarden is a tasty white ale from Belgium. I remember it like it was yesterday...
Tasty wth lemon.
go ether go !

mmmmm. Tucher with orange. goes well with hukka...
...
wednesday night buzz on, who's with me?

dammit now I want a beer.
manamana, what was the 25%er that you had?
it's a special sam adams "extreme beer"
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1502257.html
and it's no where near worth the $90 a bunch of us paid for a 24 oz bottle.
think cognac mixed with vanilla coke and a slight hoppiness. virtually no head.
the 23% dogfish head stout is similar, but way, way better, and it's only $10 for a 12 oz.
but if I'm going to spend $10 on a bottle of beer, I'm going to get the dogfish head 21% IPA every time...it's AMAZING.
yeah, the dogfidh head is pretty good. i still prefer a good belgian any day though.my latest favorite is biere de miel
thanks manamana! I just had the winter lager (lucky for me it was on tap - on second thought, make that a pitcher!!) and I agree ~ it is by far the best I've had from the SA camp!

I have to find some of that dogfish stuff!
"dammit now I want a beer." ~ send one this way!
not a big fan of the guiness. it's like 4.25%. i mean it's okay but it's no moinette brune. oh, and most things good cost money

sorry for the double post.
oops .. what happened to my image??
mana are you talking about that world wide stout from dogfish? Thats like a 6 pack in a bottle! so delicious.
artful, that's the one. the 2002 is at 23% while the 2003 is 21% [CA and UK only] and from 2003 on they have come down to 18%.
OK I'm confised - my standard pint at my corner bar in Philly was what I called "Dogfish Head Pale Ale" - is that the 21%? I don't recall it getting me sloshed ever. But it was delicious.
Add spelling "confused" with an "i" to my confusion.
I admit I was confused when you said you were confised. Luckily I have some alcohol in my system so it didn't really make a difference either way. :o)

um, what about coors light bro?
GO NASCAR!! and ICP!!
sorry, thought i had the "beer fancier" thread.
bad idea reading this thread first thing in the morning; I'm already thinking of picking up a few dogfish bottles, or my favorite stand by:
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/gouden-carolus-grand-cru-of-the-emperor/6170/
artful, if you like that you should try the abbaye des rocs grand cru

E, that sounds delicious. I'll have to keep my eye open for that one. Although a line of one of those reviews was a bit odd: "heavily yeasty with notes of wet cement, cobweb, and a light note of plastic/band-aid."
I love how this turned into the beer snob thread.
oh, and if you have the cash to drop the scaldis prestige is awesome. at $50/bottle, it's for special occassions only. i have two in my cellar right now.
http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/bush-prestige-(scaldis-prestige)/29196/
and if in seattle, my best friends own probably the best beer store and the second or third best beer bar in the nation. at least ratebeer.com says so.

mmm, beer.
(almost 5.)
as they say, it's 5 somewhere.
(3 beers/1hr) @ 7%abv / 170lbs. x 7c.o.t.* = superheavy is primed.
*where c.o.t. = coefficient of tolerance

I'm feelin the Barefoot white zinfandel right now... salad + wine for dinner makes you tipsy quick.
Rogue Dead Guy has been a long time favorite.
Dead Guy is my standard.
wow.u guys like a drink.
rioja sitting on my desk. drunk out of a coffee mug.
oh yes.
(apparently people in the uk use alcohol to deal with pressure, stress, depression and unhappines, a study has revealed. oh, really?)
woo hoo! yay!
damn tequila.
i hear ya ms. wonder. i likey the mezcal, but the tequilla will do me just fine.
e, i got home at least 45 minutes ago. question is, why the hell am i still up? and checking this, no less? eh. i need to pass out.....
i have not been drinking. but i had a fever that made me feel like jack kerouac in mexico circa 1968. what will happen on cinco de mayo when liberty and vado hang???

I think I need another shot just to make the pain go away.
