twisted in your sobriety

chatter of clouds

this  is a thought - or better yet a splash of a sentiment- apropos the gehry thread, generalized, ill written (i'm  dashing)  i admit but....

i'm not sure if the global economic and social climate -- essentially the western-gobal one-- necessitates sombreness within the creative fields. but the let-down preceded the down turn i think; the practice of architecture suffers/has suffered from some esoteric form of gastronomic disorder: a dual case of constipated-sobriety and  diarrhetic pretend  omniscience.

the idealistic pseudo-science of parametricism, the modernist theologies of minamalism, the dynamo marriage of commercialism and cutting edge architecture (realarchitecture in the vein of realpolitique)..etc. why all this know-it all seriousness? why this self incurred fatalism? why this complete sell-over?  do we no longer desire the non-self important sense of quirkiness and poetry imbodied within the scribbles of  people like fullminster and hejduk?

and here we have people who attack the gestating period prior to -and exigently led to-  the ultimate professionalising of this epoch's iconic architecture. and we have the shrill voices that emphasize the act of building over the thought of building - or that the thoughts of building cannot come to fruition without the act of building. this is a concept i completely disagree with.

in fact, let me put this ill-formed idea across - the larger an idea is in its realisation as a building- the more severe, the less interesting and the more dictatorial it is. XXL was extolled as an end to itself - but how can you come to love XXL? XXL has to be owned by an XXL entity...and isn't this seen as a major grievance that has led to today's economic rubble? there is a lot of value in the trivial, the non/almost realized and the "insignificant". in short, what is lacking is more playfulness not more Revit and more tools to ensure the uniformity of architectural practice, to make it possible to build another X in front of the XXL so all the X's are tamed to look the same.

anyway, i don't know if its possible to prescribe  solutions - personally and culturally, thats not how things work.  people change into themselves not into other people - so "solution" is a bit of a misnomer. but i would like a chance to express my dislike of what i have experienced of architectural practice. it is a fucking bore. no, its not necessarily architectural school that got it wrong - its the practice of it that got it wrong. its sad that people have to blame schools for not preparing their students in being less imaginative and more boring, how twisted.
