Does anyone know what steps are required to get a Tax Identification Number? I did a modest amount ($1500) of 'Independent Contractor' work for a firm, and they would like a TIN for their tax filings. Do I need a TIN, or is there another, better process for this sort of thing? I'm sure this varies by state, but I was hoping someone who had done this before could maybe share some guidance.
Yeah, if it's just you, they can use your SS# - your taxpayer ID by default unless you form a partnership, corporation, etc., at which point you fill out a form and pay a fee to the IRS for the number - we had our accountant do it...
1099 TIN
