USI-Mendrisio

Anyone knows anything about their masters program??

I am an old semi-burned out Cooper grad.

Recently moved back to Korea, after working 6 years in NYC.

Trying to see if I can rekindle love for architecture for one more time before and I need some help.

USI sounds like a low key, slightly reclusive & rigorous. They also seem less interested in  new computer programs or any other digitized trends.

Wonder how much I can you get away with only speaking English.

Also, I know it's not cheap compared to other EU schools. Wonder if there is any type of financial aid.

Any one know anything?

I graduated Cooper, worked for some 3 years and just returned from doing a Masters at USI...

Very reclusive village in the south of Switzerland, but an easy take off point to visit the rest of Europe...

Very Swiss.

Not as rigorous as Cooper, and a completely different method of working.  Almost no hand drawing at presentations, but not very forward on the digital front either.  A lot of emphasis on wall detail development, adhering to given briefs and formats...but not with all the professors.  They have a constantly changing roster of faculty, which helps.  Of 4 semesters I had 2 terrible studios, and 2 decent ones.  There is a great divide between the schools of Botta, Olgiati, and Zumthor...though Zumthor doesn't teach there anymore.  You end up falling into one of these "teams"

Almost the entire student body is under 25 years old, aside from a few transplants like me.  The students are composed of about 50% italian or swiss italian, and 50% from all over the world, which is great.  I also loved learning Italian, though you could definitely get away without it.

The diploma/degree is a license to practice in Switzerland and most of Europe (I think about the Europe part)...another big plus.  And they were very generous with a scholarship...I got a free ride based on portfolio.  But Switzerland is very expensive...rent wasn't so terrible though.

I hope this helps at all, though this posting is from quite a while ago...
