I read an article in the Boston Globe on Friday about Graves' disability and the renovation of his house to accomodate his needs. What I found interesting is that he has two ex wives and a two year old child with a now ex-girlfriend. What these facts had to do with the article is baffling, but damn Mike, you a playa!
Does anyone else think that one of the reason's for his 'architectural style' may be due to his lazy eye???
I would think that this condition would effect his depth perception; possibly one of the reason's his buildings are so one-dimensional (they appear as though they should be read purely as elevations)
Best description of his buildings I ever heard was: "They look like they are from a miniature golf course."
Hard to believe back in '77 drawing a twisted olive tree on your yellow trace (instead of white) could raise the hackles of some hardcore modernist critic...
I sure hope they don't make a documentary of his life...
yeah, what is the deal with some instructors getting all crazy about the color of trace paper in use? yellow or white, who gives a fuck?! how sad is it that anyone could be so micro-focused as to read some huge statement into the (slightly) varying color tone of your trace paper.
btw: everytime i see the word "playa" i think "beach" or burning man (my parents are dirty hippies). how bout we add an apostrophe to the end of that? it looks cooler anyway: playa'
in california "vamos a la playa!" (in spanish) = "let's go to the beach!"
saw some drawings once that were etched out of a black background (white reveal on dark black), looked really cool but... damned if i can remember the drawing at all, just the medium. a cautionary tale for all those tempted to sex up mediocre ideas with unusual technique.
so much bullshit in arch school! and architecture in general. drawings seem like such a waste of effort unless you're making construction documents. i don't mean sketches, sketches are cool for recording ideas or quickly conveying general intent to others, but what's the point of CAD'ing any of the stuff in between? (that wouldn't be better served, and more easily visualized by making a physical model)
oh yeah, who's michael graves?
just kidding :P
Yeah I must say I thought the same thing about Graves (aka big pimp of pomo) and about his two ex-wives & 2 y-o. I did once meet a young model/art history student from yale who was seeing him cloak & dagger.
but...in 1995 I remember doing a simple black and white drawing with yellow highlights - but most of the critics (critters) went balastic (60s arch that just never died) over my 4" black poche that ran to the end of the sheet without a border. Losers.

Or maybe he just can't hold onto a woman...
It's all because architects are bad lovers, right?
Too busy measuring things.
the real Playya is DJ....word
doesnt compare to lou kahn, either as a true playa or architect!
i thought Graves was gay
I thought graves was gay too. Maybe your the one who told me MDLER.
more reason for him to be called a true playah, since he can switch hit. he's playin' guys and gals. what self proclaimed playah would do that?

There are two colors of yellow trace, btw
There is only one true color of trace paper and if you don't know which one that is you don't belong in architecture.
Buff!
Thank you for noticing, I have been working out...
No you goofball...........I meant put some clothes on!
This thread is officially dead son
Drunkmuse, MG uses yellow, not buff
I think Michael Graves is lovely,
