it doesn’t matter what software was used. if one can comply a diagram that clearly states the composition of the staircase to the contractor, most commonly seen using 3d figures, it’s no problem. You can use an etch-a-sketch for all that matters. The only drawback is that it adds more sheets to the construction document set such that it needs to illustrate a construction sequence on how it can be assemble on site. You don’t want the contractor to interpret your design, otherwise it’ll look like something that you might not like. Also adding more sheets sometimes worries the general contractor since some based there price on how many sheets are in a set.

Software question
Does anyone know what softwares those firms are using for organic shaped objects, eg: http://www.architypereview.com/22-retail-interiors-/projects/685-armani-fifth-avenue
Are they using Maya, Rhino or some other BIM softwares? What about producing CD dwgs?
thanks a lot
UTC
Rhino + Grasshopper / 3dsMax
even for construction documents?
