INTRODUCTION
1.1 Topic Explanation
Intelligent buildings combine innovations and technology together, with skillful management, to maximize return on investment. Intelligence with respect to energy in an intelligent building consists of the reduction of energy use to the minimum. Sustainability is another issue that is related to intelligent buildings. Intelligent buildings, its application and its usefulness in the Sri Lankan context is a matter that should be studied specially for the future survival of building and new trends in Architecture.

1.2 Observations and issues identified
In the Sri Lankan context the use of new technology and advanced systems is lacking or is happening at a very low pace. In the Architecture profession it is very rare that new innovations in technology are seen, and the technological aspect of buildings is very much less spoken about even in Architecture Education.
Intelligent buildings are coming up in the International arena specially with relation to automation of various systems to promote building sustainability and to create energy efficient buildings. The Climatic aspect of building is widely spoken about in this context. Acoustics and Lighting and even transportations have new trends which are essential for the development and technological advancement in the Architecture field.
Therefore it is a must that the Sri Lankan architecture practice get updated in the new technologies epically in the new trend of the use of Automation and Artificial intelligence in building .
1.3 Criticality of observations/ issues
In the Sri Lankan context most of the buildings spend a lot of money for occupant comfort with Air conditioning and Artificial ventilation. Natural light and ventilation is cut off which increases the running costs of the building for cooling and illuminating. With the use of Artificial intelligence buildings can be made more efficient and save a lot of money that is wasted over this issue.
1.4 Possible causes
Due to the lack of technological knowledge and how to use them into buildings in the Sri Lankan context is the reason for the lack of use of such methods.
1.5 Intention of study
Therefore it is evident that it is relevant to study the use of Artificial intelligence in buildings in the international context to see how they can be applied to the Sri Lankan context.
1.6 Scope and Limitations
The limitations of this study are when speaking of new technology the structural uses of new technology in buildings are not spoken about in depth. The use of Artificial intelligence for Climatic control, Acoustics and Lighting will be studied in this dissertations with regard to buildings.
1.7 Method of study
First a study will be done on what intelligence is and what its relation to Automation is with a brief history of the use of artificial intelligence. Then a study will be done on what intelligent buildings are and what their special characteristics are that differ them from normal buildings.
Then a analytical study will be done on what ways and in what streams artificial intelligence can be adopted into buildings specially referring to a few international case studies.
Finally a study will be done to see how these systems can be incorporated into buildings in the Sri Lankan context considering the Climatic, Economical and Social aspects of Sri Lanka.
