anyone entering the siyathemba competition?

crillywazzy

that's the architectureforhumanity.org thing where you design a football pitch+ for kids in africa...

if you are considering this and might not mind having a mostly-silent, student observer view the process via email/etc, please let me know...

i've just embarked on BA arch so i would hardly be of much technical use to you, but i'd be fascinated to see how something like this germinates and unfolds. one of the only things i love more than arch is football, and this seems to be the kind of thing i'd see myself being into in the future (socially concious design, etc)

thanks.

well, yes.
but like you, i am also a student (going into my 5th year)
my advise to you would be:
just enter!
you don't have to be registered for this one!

if you need advice on how to get started, i would recommend the following:
study the site (ie: sun, wind, climate, nearby structures)
study the program (as soon as it is up)
determine how you really want to effect the people using it (ie: how to go above and beyond the program with unique features, exceptional design, recycled materials, etc.
research the heck out of everything. the more informed you are, the better your design will be.

competitions in general are more about creatively solving problems than the technical aspects you seem to be concerned with.

so loosen up, and have fun with a wonderful competition!!

indeed good advice, however, unlike you entering yr 5th year, i just finished my 5th day (!). yes i'm indeed that much of a newbie. i'll take the advice and look at the program, etc. but again, if you do forge ahead, perhaps i could be a silent observer or even quiet collaborator. just watching a mind approach a project (especially one which i feel i have an understanding of as a user) would be pretty damned useful to me at such an early stage. so far i'm doing my reading and looking to see what i like and piece together some of the why, but i have zero idea about the application aspects of arch. i can't even sign up for studios for another few months. gotta get the basic drawing 101 down first and intro to arch which is what i'm doing this summer.

crillywazzy,
Students have always placed in our competitions and it was 4th year students from RPI who were finalists for the mobile clinic project. For being awarded finalists we took them to Africa for 2 weeks.

Even non design students have entered, our youngest entrant was 14.

We are putting up all the competition info today through Wednesday and you can now register online
