Or that your parents were murdered in front of you as a child, spurring you to devote your life to vigilantism under the darkest of night. You are batman, right?

Wow!  The needle on my PC-BS meter is spinning like a propeller, and the lens cracked!  Welcome to higher education.

Oh, and say hello to Robin...

'Understanding the barriers...' and 'leadership' are good places to start. You know it's Berkeley, right? If you can't find something to build on here, you may not find that it's a good choice for you anyway.

You know it's Berkeley, right?  Yeah, Steven nailed it.  If you don't have an answer - an authentic, honest one - to this question then Berkeley is probably not a comfortable pedagogical fit for you.

Be careful!! You aren't supposed to answer that question! GO BACK and look at the application instructions from the architecture department, if I remember correctly they tell you to ignore it or they pose a different question for that space. I made that mistake last year when I was applying and wrote the essay, only to find too late that I made a mistake. Needless to say I was not accepted.

Personal History Statement — Please use the prompt provided on the University application and keep the essay to no more than two pages, double-spaced. Please only provide information described in the second sentence of the prompt if it is relevant to your experience. You are not required or expected to have any of the experience described in this second sentence.

I think denyallforks is wrong on this one. On the actual application it gives the personal history statement prompt that batman gave in his initial post. gsd110 is also right with what they posted. Meaning you have to write a personal history statement, but if you do not have the experiences they are asking about you do not need to mention things like that in your statement.

At least that's my take on it.

You should answer the question in your own way... not everyone has teaches english to immigrants in their spare time, though I, and my fiance', both did at some point. (both Berkeley M.Arch students, too).

I wrote about how I had a hard time financing my own undergraduate education and worked several jobs to keep up. I'm sure that you've had some challenges that you have overcome relating to your education, might have to get creative.
