I have noticed a stoning resemblance of the winning concept in the 2011 ThyssenKrupp Award International Competition

to the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art / SANAA...

I consider that it reflects the lack of architectural culture of the competition jury members…For the author of the winning project I hope it was not intentional. But it is not good. The images show that the both projects are very similar (plan, elevations…)
SANAA is a good inspiration but should not be imitated for the sake of such prestigious Client and his AWARD.

i just read an interview with the jury leader in arkitera (in turkish) where he is boasting the creative, original and timely aspect of the winning project..!

mind you this competition was themed around earthquakes and disaster subject.

i think it is more than lack of architectural culture but clever move by the organizers to select a project with buildable properties so they can get their propaganda machine rolling with a physical reference to a symbolic visitor center. municipality of istanbul is preparing to make some unprecedented bold moves around this subject as we speak. if activated, this could be the biggest restructuring a major city history has ever seen with hundreds of thousands of buildings demolished, new infrastructures completed, many people relocated. but if this transformation is done right, it might be a life saver for millions of people and set an example of many other turkish cities.

these are the real politics behind this seemingly harmless little competition which is one of the propaganda gateways to a half a trillion dollar overall plan/speculation.

also, suha ozkan, the jury leader and the main consultant to krupp is the biggest advocator and lobbyist for zaha's major project in kartal (she seen here with the mayor of istanbul.)
