(un)famous architects' bad behavior stories

ochona

i started to think, bad behavior isn't limited to starchitects...come on, we all have asshole stories we'd just love to compare.

ok, so i'll start (because i have plenty):

i had a boss who was as staunch a democrat as they come. i mean, you could not say the word "bush" around him without just the most vituperative of protestations. boy, he was fervent.

well, he was in a meeting with a client who had a very large checkbook and a very small tolerance for liberals. we could hear the meeting from our desks.

"oh, Client X, anyone who knows me knows how much i love george bush!"

i had another boss who was photographed at the office party with his face snuggled up in a female intern's breasts

the thing about it was, it wasn't even a bold-faced lie -- it was a squiggly little technically-true statement -- we all knew how much he loved GWB...about as much as moldy bread or a sriracha-sauce enema (both his metaphors)

I had a boss who decided one day that his wife should become our receptionist/office manager. Her background was in fashion retail. Before she became ensconced in our office she would regale us at office parties with stories of how she gathered a gorgeous wardrobe by scheming and cheating her former employers out of designer clothing. Then as soon as she became "manager" of the office she literally counted the minutes we were chatting with co-workers, grabbing a coffee at the cafe next door, or returning late from lunch.

The sad thing is, we had been a really close-knit group of 6 dedicated employees plus the boss until the evil wife showed up - and within 6 months everybody had quit.

ochona - did we work for the same guy?

first 5 minutes on the job, starts slamming libertarians, republicans - then turns, looks at me and says, "you're not a republican, right?"

dipshit saved loads of gay porn on the server, which we had to back up.

never had kahn as a prof., but told clients kahn was his mentor when the client mentioned the salk institute.

passed over for management at a great local firm, squeezed out of the firm, all his employees knew, but he'd constantly lie about what happened...

couldn't cad, hardline or sketch up anything, but boy could he wordsmith - not even an email would leave the office without 4 passes of the fine-toothed comb.

started slamming a big-box corporation, only to find out clients wife is upper management with said client - justifiably loses part of job.

inability to keep tabs on costs of several projects, budgets come in 2-3.5 times over - justifiably loses jobs and blames everyone in office.

hired local graphic designer, with a great eye that had done work for several other local architects/bars, to do graphics package. berated designer behind back left and right, said he could do much better if only he had the time.

clif bars, bad breath and terrible bathroom odors...

lastly (and my personal fave) the project that would have "put him on the map," so to speak, was abruptly put on hold a few years before i started at the firm when the client died. with model and drawings proudly displayed throughout the office, told propsective clients that the project was on hold, and would be starting any minute.

yeah, really i could go on and on, but i've got a job at a much better firm and actually find myself looking forward to getting to work and don't get physically ill on the way there. it's a great change.
