Yes we're all obsessed with the nebulous possibilities of Google Earth, so now why don't you add-on a way to export your 3ds models directly into it? This may be just what you have been looking for:http://www.5d-software.com
FYI Sketchup has had this plugin for a few months now. Go on to google earth and go to New York City. Turn on 3D models and Viola. There is your context.
The ideal would be to have the reverse plugin: import google.earth content into max. but of course, it may take more than 5d. at least 8 or 9.
You can export from Google Earth to SketchUp, then from SketchUp to 3ds. I'm not recommending it, I'm just putting it out there. .mm
You can? You can download their city libraries? I would be very surprised if you could, as those are worth thousands each. It's a cool idea, but I don't see how it's going to be helpful for professionals (great for students), unless you can download the 3D data. Anyone know for sure? I would really like to get an accurate topo profile for an upcoming project.
My bad, you may only be able to take a 3D snapshot of the file, not the full city. http://www.sketchup.com/index.php?id=408 Can't say that I've ever used sketchup, but just wanted to put it out there. .mm
