(hint, if you aren't resourceful enough to find interesting offices in chicago on your own you may not fit into an innovative firm along the lines of garofalo or studio gang anyhow...if you have to ask you'll never know.)
if you're going to be in chicago on thanksgiving you should go see the
INDO-JEW BOWL. link
It's in Skokie. I wouldn't have bought a plane ticket home if I had known about this in advance. You know what my plans are for next year...
i will be drivin up to chicago tomorrow after work. am not planning on visiting an architectural landmarks, except the music box. am just hanging with friends drinkin some wine. etc... definitely not going to skokie.
I have no experience with Skokie and probably never will...but when you hear of something called the Indo-Jew Bowl - it gets me interested. In a freak show type of way.
skokie is one of the largest centers of Jewish culture in America - located just north of the city, and just west of Evanston. The neighborhood it abuts in the city is largely Pakastani, Indian, Askanazi - Central Euro - Jew, Russian jew, and a whole lot more I'm leaving out. Its actually a very interesting area.
yeah - I guess my comment came off very wrong. I was surprised when I was told of the Indo-Jew Bowl (from someone who used to live in skokie) I was surprised b/c when I hear of something from the suburbs my jaded brain quickly goes negative. She even explained to me how diverse Skokie is, I am sorry. It surprising to hear of something interesting, something diverse, and something that unites...coming form the great suburbs of Chicago (or of anywhere)
Once again, I am sorry.

when it comes to chicago not much to talk about besides doug and dogs. sigh. I still love Chicago and the mexican food. but exciting architectural practice...well paul prisesner is teaching at UIC....and he's from SCI Arch and that's way cool...right?
chicago
can any of you recommend innovative firms along the lines of garofalo and studio gang in chicago?
specifically research focused practices that value teaching and speculation....
any help much appreciated.
you might start here.
or here.
and even here.
ahh, another chicago thread.

hey im going to chicago what buildings should i see?
hey, im going to chicago - how can i find stanley tigerman?
it's the weiner circle!
thats right by binny's right?
I'm going to Chicago, where are the good strippers?
it's just a little south of binny's, around diversey or so
I knew a cool bartender/amature dominatrix who lived in the third floor window of that bldg. behind wieners circle.
that's the true test of whether you're a tourist or a local: how does one pronounce "diversey?"
probably the most uncomfortable word to say in the entire english language -- no matter which syllable gets the stress, it doesn't sound right
btw, it's div-ER-see
also, "paulina"
that reminds me of a dirty joke;
what 2 street chicago street names rhyme with "vagina"?
paulina and lunt
ok. sorry.
my wife told me that one, i think
i know i'm giving away all the secrets, but:
Devon = de-VON
Library el stop = li-BEAR-ee
Throop = "troop"
and "pop" and "wisconsin", as pronounced by chicagoans, don't have "O" but rather "A" in them, like "pahp" and "wiscahnsin"
oh, and it's "da" jewel, not just "jewel"
oh, and "over by dere" means "near to"
oh, and a "prairie" is a vacant lot
as in: i baht a pap at da jewel and den took a shortcut across da prairie over by dere to wiscahnsin avenue to catch da bus
car = currr
bar = burrr
"step up" = "step down" = next in line, please
wc is on the west side of clark between wrightwood and drummond.
though, i really prefer hot doug's.
hot doug's is the shit, i love that place
doggie diner on armitage across from LP high school
byron's on irving park w of sheridan
hot doug's--amen, although god knows how i ran across that place the first time i went
mustards last stand in evanston. dig it
where is that in evanston? my folks live right across the border
i have heard mythical tales of hot doug's
its on the way to ryan field
they'll prolly know it, then
I used to talk shit about hot dougs all the time... then I actually went there. Holy crap, its the best hotdog place on earth.

TED, you should post that one of doug=doug to the separated at birth page. love those duck fat french fries....
Wow... It's like Clark Kent / Superman. Mild-mannered hot dog vendor by day, lose the glasses, then architectural superhero at night.
