Can you give some references of residences (various scales) where bedrooms are located below the living/kitchen etc areas? I know there are many - I can only think of a few.

Where I live, in the mountains at about 9000', this is a fairly common setup. The bedrooms are on the lower, cooler, entry floor with a mudroom, and the living/kitchen areas are on the warmer upper level where the views will not be blocked by piling snow. It ends up being all about the mudroom, a staple in boot and coat country.
