How much Calc?

stainedglassgirl

Hi everyone!

I'm a junior at a liberal arts college and am pretty sure I'd like to go to architecture school after I graduate. I know a lot of top schools require calc/physics but I'm not clear on how much.

I've taken 1 semester of Calc and would rather not take another semester (I'm doing fine in it but taking more of it causes so many scheduling issues). How much calc should I take to get into a good architecture school? (And I don't know if I'll be able to squeeze the physics in either...)

I know there's summer courses to take and such but I don't have the funds to do so. If it means going to architecture school I'll make it work, but I'd really rather not take a 2nd semester of calc and a year of physics.

Any and all advice would be great! Thanks!

Most programs seem to require one semester of college math, and some may even credit high school AP calc work, but I'd check with your chosen institution's admissions office to confirm that.  I think that they mainly just want to make sure that you have the mind for that type of thinking, not that you have a particular level of formally trained mathematical aptitude.  The grade you got in the one semester will tell them that much.

Speaking for myself, I find math interesting, and a useful lens through which to see the world.  I also do better in it than the language arts.  So I took much more than just the one semester.  But that has everything to do with me personally.. and nothing to do with what's needed to do architecture successfully.

Most schools you need at least college algebra + trig and one semester of physics and you will be fine since you have calculus done you are fine on math for every masters program I looked into. Now work to fit in the one semester of college  physics you need that (maybe more important) so you do not have to take it in the summer before you start.
