My school had a campus wide license for MATLAB, which probably has tools/toolboxes already written. It's not necessarily user-friendly for the average arch student, but nothing you can't spend some time learning.
As I mentioned above, maybe your university's science or engineering schools have licenses to MATLAB or something similar. I did work on computation intelligence in school, and I found these other departments invaluable, for courses, expertise, software, etc.
