Hello,
Can anyone reccommend a good (and inexpensive) place to go to have my portfolio printed and bound? This will be sent in my application package to M.Arch programs this December.
Also, any general tips on this process are much appreciated!
Sam Flax has some nice options for portfolio binders. They have choices for all budgets. $5 up to $100 depending on what you like. I personally found a nice clear plastic 12-page binder that is minimally intrusive, easy to use, and CHEAP!!! Of course it limits my portfolio to 12-pages, but I am also working on the grad portfolio which I have heard is a thing best done short and sweet, but thorough and well designed, so for me it fits. As far as printing, I have always used kinkos, but I'm sure there could be cheaper places out there.
make it yourself, that is what Im doing....
You dont need no stinking binder. learn how to make books, it is easy, and I like a nice little porto-book.
Micropage Press on 900 Broadway has some nice quality printing and binding - not sure on prices for individual books.
Kinkos is unreliable, people there dont care about your work. I think printing it yourself is the best and most control.
Print Icon (18th btwn 5th & 6th) is good for binding, you can get chrome coils, which are not available at Kinkos. They are a pretty cool place, they are careful with your work and listen if you have real anal requirements.
My choice was to go and buy an Epson stylus 2200 at B&h for 600 bucks, and
just do all the printing at home. That investment plus the steep price of replacement ink cartridges was quite a lot, but well worth it if you want to print many copies, experiment with different papers, and do everything on your timeframe. Plus you get a great photo quality printer to take with you
when you go to school. A printing job at any commercial place would probably run into the several hundred dollar range anyways.
Kinko's is unacceptably poor. I don't think I would have gotten into any schools if I went with them. The portfolio is too important for their bullshit.

Let apple print it and bind it for you:

i'm with +q. Just invest $350 in an Epson 1280 and buy some paper/ink cartridges. Tinker at home.

omg kinkos sucks! and their color printing is a nightmare.
Many people have recommended National Reprographics to me.
