In Max, and probably most 3D packages, you can make a gradient ramp (with no gradients - just solid/hard colors). Make it black/white/black/white etc., and stick it in your bump channel.
That's the quick way and will look fine from far away. It will not cast accurate shadows, however. For that and more accuracy you need to make it in 3D.
