A second pair of eyes.....

Like many others, I am working on my portfolio for grad schools.  Berkeley's requirements call for 12 pages allotted, which means I am reworking all my projects to fit into this format.  I am trying to condense as much information as possible without it seeming too cluttered or over-saturated with information.  I don't know if I have been staring at this too long or if it truly is the case, but I feel that things are starting to get a little too cluttered.  I have attached two of the twelve pages and would love some input.  Ignore the text, it's all place holder text, and even the text that I have added needs rewording and editing.

and here is the link if you want to zoom in or anything.....

Since I am applying to grad school as well, I don't think I am in the position to give advice, but I have to say it's looking good.

I do,however, have a question that I wanted to ask since I am applying to Berkeley as well.

What size are you doing your portfolio in?

My portfolio is 12"x16"

It's kind of a random size, but I was going with something that would work on most monitors, since this is only going to live on the computer.  I emailed Berkeley asking if they had a suggested or preferred size, and was told to use my best judgement keeping in mind that it was going to be viewed on monitors of different sizes.

What size are you using?

well since I don't have any knowledge in this sort of thing, I am just going to use whatever GSD gave us which is 12 x 18. Should be a fair size to use, I think.

Hard to condense 50+ pages to 11-12. Couple months back I was bitching about how these physical portfolios is expensive to print out and wished they do online. but now I wish they take physical since I am liking my portfolio a lot as a printed media. :|

Rusty!

Drawing 01 is suburban garbage. Not even up to date suburban garbage, The slanted parking should be slanted the other way, so that you don't blindly back into oncoming traffic.

Drawing 02 is confusing. Rendering of an overpriced gym. Bunch of section that don't make sense. I don't get it.

Sorry dude. But you just may have a highly successful career in this profession producing easily digestible crap :)

Feel better rusty? I know a few daycares that you could burn down or nursing homes you could shoot up if you still have some anger you need to get out.

You'll note I'm not really asking for a critique of the work itself, just the presentation of it. It's a little late in the game to be redoing an entire project so any comments like yours don't serve any purpose whatsoever.

The only thing that made me instantly shudder was the font on "Julia Carson." I can buy cursive fonts with a heavy dose of irony, but this looks a little too earnest. I would choose a font that doesn't draw so much attention to itself.

Won and done williams: thanks for the input, I have gone back and forth on the cursive font so there's a good chance it won't make it. My intent was to treat the title differently than the rest of the board (font wise) to let it stand out a bit more.  The further along I get, the more I am leaning towards just using the same font as the rest of the boards, especially when it comes to some other projects with titles that don't make sense to use this method.

donaldsmith: uh, what?

I emailed Berkeley about page count (there's always some confusion about whether "page" means spread or both sides of the paper), and this is the response I got:

"The maximum portfolio size is 10MB, with no more than 12 PDF pages of design work. Any table of contents, title pages, covers or spacing sheets do not count towards this total. Each PDF page can be formatted as a two-page spread. The review will occur completely online using monitors of various sizes."

It's a little confusing - does this mean I have, in effect, 24 pages or 6 pages? What could I hope to gain by formatting it this way?

You essentially have 24 pages, or 12 spreads of "design" pages.  Pages like a table of contents, cover page, etc do not count towards the 12 page limit.
