Asking for a letter of Rec

Spackle

Tips on asking professors for letters of rec.

Ideally, I'd meet them in person, however, that is not an option as my former professors are scattered across the globe.

Would a formal letter asking if they are comfortable with writing me a letter be appropriate or would a comprehensive email (attached pdf of work history and work samples) be sufficient?

In person is best. Otherwise a good time to ask is before you graduate and even better is to do so shortly after completing a class with that prof. But for folks that didn't know they were heading to grad school, or can't schedule a face-to-face meeting, a message (letter or email is fine) with a brief update of what you've accomplished since graduating, and a few items to remind the professor about your academic work that you produced for them should suffice. Some profs may follow up by asking for a resume or work samples - but don't send them unless asked.

good luck!
