This is some of my work up to the 6th semester B.Arch, studying in India. Abrasive comments welcome.. the pics are very low res, but from what u can make of em, pls pass judgement.
Ditto on the V gallery thing. Part of me likes the earlier stuff better, before the 3DS renderings take over the portfolio. The illustrations are clearer. Some of the later computer-generated interior renderings aren't really showing anything.
v is interesting. bringing up ando is strange though. the sumiyoshi row house that you were inspired by is his translation of a traditional japanese urban house typology, so isn't an ando tadao type house at all, it's just basic vernacular. anyway, your work is unique enough that you don't need to defer credit for the design to ando.
agree the computer work is flatter than the earlier stuff; harder to understand, and looks more generic.
Otherwise, I agree with the flat comments on the computer stuff.
The hand models are far more interesting and spatial.
Also, the Libeskind museum page seems to be about analysis, but there's just some pictures of models, no explanation of what you learned from the analysis.
Depending on what the portfolio is for, adding the graphic design stuff as a secondary emphasis may not be in your best interest (for example, if applying to graduate arch program). Just my 2 cents.
this in regard's to the portfolio as a construction in itself...
personally, and this is just one opinion, i would like to see the pages themselves more constructed, say with more intent. allow us to focus on the best part of each project, make it the concentration of the page and allow it to be the organizing factor of the pages.
right now i believe there is some solid work, but i tend to lose focus and don't know where i really need to look. make it blunt and obvious.
Yeah, I've begun to realise that the computer really hasn't done much good to my design abilities.. this semester I'm taking a sabbatical from the machine and returning to hand-drawn and physical models.
The V-Gallery is one of my favorite projects too.. it happened before I developed most of the creativity-destroying preconceptions that tend to creep in midway through an architectural education. You're all right, the computer renderings ARE flat and featureless.
AP: why would adding the graphic design stuff be a bad idea?
bb8: That's a great suggestion, thanks.. but this is by no means a draft of a portfolio, I just wanted to put my stuff together to show to some friends. I will keep in mind your opinion, though.
I am not sure if you are looking for a critique of the portfolio layout/design, or critiques of the actual work... I have some comments in regards to the design of the portfolio since I haven't spent much time studying the actual content. However, most people who view your portfolio won't spend much time viewing it either so...
Work on the order that the projects are presented in; you could start out with a more impressive project. Perhaps the V project is a good starting point.
I think the "Iraq Monument" piece could use more images and less writing. Who's going to read all that?
I wouldn't include a model of another architect's project (Jewish Museum) unless I was specifically going to a job interview for a model making job.
The student center looks like a strong piece, but the layout doesn't show it off very well. I would scrap the third image down. It's just boring.
Work on the titles and writing. I'm not sure if placing the titles all in the lower left hand corner is working... Or maybe it is the font/size/color used. As well, do you really need all of that text? I don't want to read all that. Shorten it, people are more likely to read it. Be concise. And don't start your explanation with "An important fourth-semester project was the..." Important to who? To the school? The professors? Did they say it was important? Do you think it's important? I don't think it is important to say that something is important. Just prove it to people through the design.
I don't know if the cross section on "crosswinds" is unique/interesting enough to use as your main image for the project. Perhaps you should trade it with one of the smaller images below it.
You've got a lot of strong images for the "Cultural Centre Bangalore", but you start your three page spread with one image: an iso of the stacked floors. Why? Then you crowd four images onto the next page. I'd suggest using one of the exterior renderings as the introductory image, and using the iso later.
Thanks Alana.. it was a mistake to put this stuff up without thinking about the layout of the portfolio itself first. Thanks for the constructive criticism. By important, I meant important to our class.. we're a small bunch, about 40 of us, and each projects tends to be a milestone of one sort or the other.
I dont want to read all the other posts but here are my two cents:
Your best work is your graphic design. In the future use it as process, it is engaging, interesting, and spatial. Your buildings on the other hand lack the sophistication of your graphic design.
I think that it is matter of re-sizing things. The whole portfolio (architecture) is speaking at the same volume. Scream, tell me something not using text.
Way too much text, aint no one gonna read that much, no client, no school, no employer.
The graphics of your lay out are nice.
nice work manu. the pics clearly showed the extent of work done in your school and also ur efficiency in using the computer. i bet, you wud have an amazing portfolio by the time you finish college in a 1.5 years.
with you showing your works done in college i would have also wanted to see some sketchings. sometimes its boring just to show the finished products without showing manually done development sketches.
right, too much text. and having 'architecture graphics' on the cover page makes people think you are more a graphic layout designer than an architecture student. cool posters to suit the theme btw. and why Rs.49/ and not 50 for the open couple play? caught my eyes instantly. :) make sure your role in these competition entries and group work shows out. page 16 looks like a page torn from a comic book. the rest people have discussed already. nice work again.
it depends whether its a grad school portfolio, professional portfolio. grad schools specifically would want to see the process undertaken and with the developments of the applicant.
if u are showing a client your portfolio, it does`nt make much sense to see your conceptual scribblings and much theory.
reqd: critiques - check out some of my work.

I'm in my 7th semester B.Arch right now, studying in Bangalore. Thanks.
yeah ok ignore me..
ok
The architectural gallery with the v-shaped light well is interesting. Nice work.

Don't get pissy that no one's responding yet; it's a Saturday morning, dude. Everyone's sleeping off Friday night...

Architecture is getting Bangalored.
I tend to feel that "precedent studies" should be left out of portfolios. But that's just me.
Words like "centre and colour" are semi-pretentious and contextually irrelevant here in the states...
Work looks good tho my friend. Good job!

I also agrre I wouldnt put the libeskind, it didnt seem to influence much.

Thanks all..
chameleon: Rs.49 because any production charging Rs.50 and above per head is subject to entertainment tax .. hehe.
One question: is a portfolio supposed to exhibit the development of one's design abilities up to the climax, or just the end results?
it depends whether its a grad school portfolio, professional portfolio. grad schools specifically would want to see the process undertaken and with the developments of the applicant.
if u are showing a client your portfolio, it does`nt make much sense to see your conceptual scribblings and much theory.
Climax without foreplay is just not the same....
Climax from Foreplay is better
Does one explicitly try and display development?
good work
