why would you use one of these packages for doing a detail like a steel beam? wouldn't you use autocad or something similar made esp for architecture and drafting?
if you want youre software to do everything for you even detailing the steel, like john prolly wants, then maya probably isnt a good package for you.. its that easy.
but some people are comfortable using different toold for different tasks.
just like im ok using an oven to bake my bread, but i dont feel it needs to be able to make my coffee as well. (thats the job of my husband)
ok, I guess I'll feed the troll, since snowi likes it so much.
hotsies:
since your reading comprehension skill are apparently lacking (ooh, burn! - that's for you snowi, cool, no?), I'll make this very clear.
There is a difference between saying
"alias seems to be"
and
"alias is"
Get it yet? Didn't think so.
"alias seems to be..." indicates the general perception I've gained watching alias' marketing, feature releases, and general business practice for the last 5 years. This thread demonstrates that I'm obviously far from alone in having such a perception.
"alias is..." is a blunt statement of incontrovertable fact, which, as you so eloquently pointed out (NOT! - yes, I made a not joke, wann fight about it?), might not be entirely 100% all-the-time true, if you wanted to nitpick.
not-so-coincidentally, dropping that part of my post (when you quoted it) is the only way you had the slightest smidgen to nitpick pointlessly about.
You dug yourself in a hole, got called on it, and then tried to nitpick your way out, but you couldn't even do that without some selective editing.
Congratulations, you've demonstrated you're an idiot, and acted like an ass in the process.
(I put that in there just for your entertainment snowi, I do hope you appreciated it)
And for those who are interested (though i can't imagine why anyone would be, as this whole discussion is already uninterestingly idiotic enough):
A couple more anecdotes from alias' recent past:
~3 years ago, greg lynn was starting some high profile project (I forget which one) and the team was a little short on maya licences. they went to alias with the offer of: give us a few temporary licences, and you can use us and some of our stuff in your marketing.
had they wanted to market to architects, that would have been a golden offer. They said no.
Dreamworks: sat on the fence for several years, before finally deciding to transition to their own set of custom in-house apps. Alias freaked and practically offered them the moon to change their minds.
Pixar: went to alias and said they wanted to switch from linux to OSX because of the Jobs connection. At the time, maya complete was available to macs, though buggy. maya unlimited for Mac was planned for sometime in the distant future, and the whole dreamworks F-up had just hit the fan.
alias poured resources into Mac development, and less than a year later, pixar was running G5s and a stable, supported version of maya unlimited.
Right.. i guess what i thought was untrue was youre claim the go (seem to) out of their way to not market..which, since youre quite interested in semantics, would mean that they are actively pursuing ways to not market to us.. not just maintaining a disinterest.
HMMM.... well for starters, maya's basic shader package does not include any arch materials, while 3ds is loaded.
Dont get me wrong. I have used and plan to use maya more. I just dont think it's suitable for "problem solving" that I like to undertake in my 3d models.
It's good for gestural investigations but it wont make my coffee taste right.
I think saying no to lynn's team is an active avoidance. As is avoiding features that would be fairly easy to add.
How did you pass freshman english? (<---for snowi)
because I say they seem to does not mean that 100%-all-of-the time they do. again, we're talking general perception here ("seems too", which you're dropping again in the last part of your post just so you can nitpick...tsk tsk)
if you can't grasp such a basic concept, I can't help you.
Basically, in terms of critical discussion, the versioning and serial reproduction features within a lab environment. That’s part of the discussion. The other part I would like to address just in terms of facilitating a kind of generative serial lab atmosphere. Which is basically what I’m doing at the moment. Serial lab features and script. Let’s say you want complexity. Here’s where a dynamic theory of complexity and seriality come crashing into a kind of sort of form expertise. In the LAB. This is the GOAL. Like driving into a wall. Or some critical, dynamic theoretical mix of thinking and doing and then, copying. Which is basically the theoretical crux at the moment. And the hermeneutical discourse, basically. Things will start to coincide, pretty much. Theory and my own expertise and technique. That’s one way to start to digitally facilitate. I know that the goal for me is a Dynamic Versioning Set. That’s my goal. Ultimately. Let’s hope I get there.
What's Maya good for anyway?

absolutely nuffin, say it again
by the way, I love these e-feuds. go hotsies, bake manamana some more, keep pretending you're not a man, baby!
hernan's scripts, where are they? bueller?
