My roommate just won a AIA honor award (student project). I did google it but still not sure what is it.
Does anyone heard about this award and can give me a little bit explanation? Is that really selective and can make a great difference in your grad school application? Like if you are applying GSD, YALE those pier? Is that a really big award?
As a Junior architecture student I don't really know how important is a architecture competition. Is that gonna be really helpful to get in top grad schools if you won some?
I have a national AIA honor award from one of the technology-related subcommittees.
It never came up in any interviews, and grad school admissions didn't really care.
Depending on what category the award is in, it may or may not be helpful. If you think you are somehow disadvantaged for not having one, I wouldn't worry about it.
No. Because the award is utterly irrelevant with regard to where I went to school :)
And some of the awards are not a big deal whatsoever- like mine. I think there were four entries the year I won. I don't think I won (in a technical category) because it was high design.
If your roommate won "best student designer of 2011" then that may be worth something. But if it was the best student application of a rhino3d extension, probably not as much.

Probably from a regional area; NYC, Los Angeles area, etc..
It definitely could be helpful.

Congratulations Token AE!
Could you tell me where did you go to grad school and where did you graduated from?
No. Because the award is utterly irrelevant with regard to where I went to school :)
