Thought this competition (being run by Van Alen Institute) would be of interest to fellow archinecters. I've been working on this competition as an intern for the City Parks Association here in Philadelphia:
*Urban Voids: Grounds for Change. An International Design Competition*
"How can a city respond to the crisis of vacancy? Philadelphia, with over 40,000 vacant properties representing nearly 1,000 acres, has become one of the nation's foremost examples of urban abandonment and extensive sprawl.
The competition sponsors invite participants to suggest compelling ideas for Philadelphia's vacant land and imagine fantastic long-term solutions that inspire change and reshape urban and natural forms throughout the city."
I believe that the field is wide open. The jury was picked by members of the competition sponsor organizations, especially the City Parks Association (http://www.cityparksphila.org)

I like to think of the intersection of Germantown Avenue, Broad Street and Erie Avenue as a little Times Square. The Burey Building has the nicest top of any Philadelphia highrise building and it's just falling apart.
So it seems that this competition is legit. I just finished looking at all the great work done by Philadelphia LandVisions group in preparation for this competition. I am permanently skeptical of the legitimacy of competitions after being burned in the East Darling Harbour Competition this summer. But, here it looks like there is a whole lot of homework done.
