I was a student there when Predock won the commission back in the late 80s. Sure wish they had checked into the whole fault line issue, what a waste of a neat building. On another note, I've recently been in touch with Neil Jackson, one of the arch. history lecturers there in the 80s. Found him through one of his books on steel frame buildings. One of my favorite teachers. Should have realized then that arch history was my "thing" (now a preservation consultant). Took me several more years to figure. Thanks to my Cal Poly boyfriend (architect) back then! Great website!
Yes, the CLA building is iconic. But that is about all the nice things I can say about it after having to navigate my way into it over the past few months. there is no 'front door' and the few doors into it are in hard to find locations that don't engage the rest of the campus (or the parking lot). Inside, it's a warren of small offices and rooms with minimal daylighting, no redeeming details/materiality, or any sectional vision. Really, I'm not a fan - Predock has built better buildings.

FRaC here is my image of the building from a recent visit to Cali. It was quite nice. Liked the little plaza between both buildings..
