getting a BA or a BS in architecture...help!

oxygenoverdose

I go to a school that offers a BA and a BS in architecture. The BS is designed as part of the "4 plus 2" program, while a BA is, presumably, not. Does anyone know how many years of grad school I can expect to take with a BA? I would still take four years of studio, so my portfolio would probably be similar to if I got a BS. Do many schools offer "advanced standing", somewhere between 2 and 3.5 years? I know that many people advocate not doing too much architecture as an undergrad (being liberally educated, etc.) but I don't want to spend 3.5 years in grad school when I do already have an undergraduate degree in architecture.

Also, I'm considering grad school in continental europe of the UK. Would a BA be sufficient to transfer in as an advanced student (i.e. part II in the UK) or would I need a BS.

Thanks!

you know, schools do have websites that explain how their various degrees work.

i realize that. but i wanted to know if there was a general trend, and besides, many websites don't offer much imformation of this subject. If anyone knows anything...

I have a B.A. in Architecture and out of the grad schools i got into 70% offered the 2 year advanced placement. so it may depend on the grad school you apply to and their perception of your undergraduate school. You should perhaps talk with an academic advisor at your school.

If you want to study outside of the U.S. I would suggest getting a B.S.

MUUM79- I've gained admission to an advanced 2 year March program with my bachelors degree being a B.A. in Architectural studies. Was the pace of the grad program overwhelming or was it an easy adjustment. The curriculum will culminate in a thesis project(2ndyr) and i'm slightly shook in my boots. your thoughts?

Well, I'll be starting in a couple weeks, so i can't really answer. but from talking to some of my classmates from undergrad who have gone through grad school already i'm expecting it to be like going to the next level intellectually and in intensity.

i go to wash u (stl). the difference is senior year, basically...either you stick with your three years of studio, year of history, graphics, building systems, case studies, and one elective, or you go on and continue with another year of studio, year of structures, and at least two more history/theory courses. although i would take studio anyway even to get a BA...

but thanks for the clarification j, i didn't realize there was such variety in curriculum
