are you trying to reduce the file size or scale the size of the document down? If it's the latter, and for printing, you could just select the page size and fit to page, but I suspect it's something else.
If you wanted to go from 11x17, you could print to a PDF and make the page size 8.5x11... you shouldn't lose any quality.

no, i was looking to reduce an a2 drawing to a4, but not for printing, and without losing too much quality. i'll try these and see what works. thanks.
